South Africa's Playground

Durban often referred to as "South Africa's Playground" should definitely be on your bucket list of South African destinations to explore. With its rich history, Durban fuses various religions, races, and cultures into one magnificent melting pot of people and experiences. The diversity which is Durban does not stop with its people as it boasts some of the country's most beautiful beaches, landscapes, and attractions.

Attractions Galore

There's an absolutely good reason why Durban is known as the playground of South Africa and it stems forth from the multitude of things to do and attractions to visit. Your day or days will be filled with so many activities that it would be hard to decide on which to leave out. Most of these attractions and activities won't break the bank or empty your pockets. Take some of these pocket-friendly lists of things to do (which I did) for an example:

Enjoy some fun in the sun at uShaka Marine World and learn all about Durban’s marine life.

Explore Durban's History through Museum tours.

Catch a tan, jog, swim, or surf on some of the finest beaches around along the Golden Mile beachfront. The Golden Mile beaches are conveniently located close to Durban’s city center which is why it is so popular.

For some adrenaline-pumping action try out the World's Highest Swing at Moses Mabhida Stadium, South Africa’s 2010 Soccer World Cup stadium.

Visit Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World for some entertainment. It houses restaurants, a casino, cinemas and so much more.

Shop at some of the best street markets and shopping malls around.

The finest and most fragrant spices in the world can be found here so, take your sensory glands on a taste and smell adventure!

Or simply dig into some of Durban's most delicious dishes. A must-try is the famous "Bunny Chow", a hollowed-out half loaf of bread filled to the brim with authentic Durban Curry!

While in Durban, why not stop by Umhlanga and visit the Umhlanga Lighthouse.

Best Time to Visit

Durban is an all year round destination but an ideal time would be in South Africa’s summer season, which spans between November to February. It might be wise to avoid travelling in December as the crowds of tourists can become a bit much to handle.

Where to Stay?

A trip to Durban is worth every cent but you might want to save on accommodation costs and make use of extra cash to splurge on food and entertainment. But where to stay is the question? To answer this have a lookout for budget-friendly hotels, backpackers, or Airbnb’s.

What are you waiting for?

Durban is calling and you should heed its call. You will not be disappointed with the many attractions and activities on offer you will be begging for more time to explore. I know I cannot wait to visit this absolute gem of a city again. If you are like me and you love warm South African weather, breath-taking beaches, and mouth-watering dishes then start planning your next playdate at South Africa’s Playground, Durban!
