The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA),the expansive white structure located in the restored heritage Manikyavelu Mansion on a sprawling 3.5 acres of land in Bengaluru. It oozes a certain kind of warmth that not many government-owned cultural spaces do.

Housed in a century-old mansion, the former vacation home of the Raja Manikyavelu Mudaliar, a Mysuru royalty – this world class art museum showcases an impressive permanent collection (exhibitions, film screenings, dance programs, talks, and workshops).

With well-lit and airy rooms with windows opening out into the garden space, the ambiance here is captivating.The old wing exhibits works from pre-independence era connected by a bridge, the sleek new wing focuses on contemporary post-Independence works.

Once you are done visiting the awesome collection which is on display, one can catch a breath of fresh air its gardens.For a visitor, there is so much to experience besides the art display.

It houses a permanent collection of more than 500 art works. Raja Ravi Varma, Amrita Sher-Gil, Jamini Roy, Sudhir Patwardhan, Vivan Sundaram and three Tagores {Abanindranath, Gaganendranath and Rabindranath}, VS Gaitonde, MF Hussain, Mukul Dey along with other prominent works.Today the NGMA is host to art from the 18th century right up to the current times.

It also houses sculptures by the likes of S. Dhanpal and Kanayi Kunhiraman as well as artworks by Arpita Singh and Anjolie Ela Menon, among others.

The art reference library, auditorium, cafeteria, sculpture garden and museum shop are other highlights of the structure.

Photography is forbidden inside the gallery, but in the gardens its allowed.
