First Leg of the Journey: Raipur to Delhi

Our journey kicked off with an evening flight from Raipur to Delhi. As the plane took off, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. My husband and I chatted about our plans and what we hoped to see and do in Vietnam. The flight was smooth, and we reached Delhi with a few hours to spare before our next leg.

Day 1: Flight: Delhi to Hanoi

After a quick dinner in Delhi, we boarded our overnight flight to Hanoi, filled with anticipation for the adventures ahead. Though the flight was long, the excitement of exploring a new country kept me awake. We arrived early in the morning, greeted by the warm and humid air of Vietnam, feeling like we had stepped into an entirely different world.

Upon landing, we checked into The Hanoi-an Central Hotel, a cozy and welcoming place right in the heart of Hanoi. After a hearty breakfast, we were refreshed and ready to embark on our first day of exploration in this vibrant city.

Hanoi City Tour

Our first full day in Hanoi was a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and cultural experiences. Here is the detailed itinerary for the day:

Tran Quoc Pagoda: We began at the tranquil Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi, located by the serene West Lake. The peaceful atmosphere and intricate architecture offered a perfect introduction to the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Temple of Literature: Next, we visited the iconic Temple of Literature, dedicated to Confucius. This historical gem, once Vietnam’s first national university, left us in awe with its stunning pavilions, courtyards, and age-old trees. Walking through the temple felt like stepping back into the past, surrounded by centuries of knowledge and tradition.

Imperial Citadel of Thang Long: A visit to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was like walking through history. This ancient complex served as the political center of Vietnam for over 1,000 years. The grand gates, archaeological relics, and remnants of old palaces offered fascinating insights into Vietnam’s rich imperial past. The citadel’s blend of Vietnamese and Chinese architectural influences made it a memorable stop on our Hanoi exploration.

The calm waters reflected the charming Ngoc Son Temple, accessible via the vibrant red The Huc Bridge. This was a perfect spot for capturing photos and soaking in the beauty of Hanoi.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: An iconic landmark in Hanoi, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is where the preserved body of Vietnam's beloved leader, Ho Chi Minh, rests. The grand structure, inspired by Lenin’s mausoleum, is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. Just a short walk from the mausoleum lies the One Pillar Pagoda, a small yet unique Buddhist temple built in 1049. Shaped like a lotus flower rising from the water, it symbolizes purity and enlightenment. This peaceful spot offers a moment of serenity amidst Hanoi's bustling energy.

St. Joseph’s Cathedral: We ended the day with a visit to St. Joseph’s Cathedral, a beautiful neo-Gothic church that stands as a reminder of Hanoi’s colonial past. The towering structure illuminated under the evening lights was nothing short of magical.

Train Street: We intentionally chose to skip the train experience, feeling it had become overly touristy and commercialised. Instead, we decided to explore more offbeat and authentic places. For similar reasons, we opted not to visit Quang Phu Cau Incense Village, as it seemed to cater heavily to tourism rather than offering a genuine cultural experience.

Pro Tips for the Day:

Do:

● Carry a map or download an offline map to navigate the Old Quarter’s maze-like streets.

● Stay hydrated throughout the day, as the heat and humidity can be overwhelming.

● Wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking a lot.

● Try the amazing street food from different cities of Vietnam!

Don’ts:

●Avoid relying on taxis without meters. Opt for rideshare apps like Grab to avoid being overcharged.

●Do not miss out on experiencing the vibrant street food—just ensure the stalls look clean and hygienic.

The drive through the countryside was a treat in itself, with vast stretches of lush green rice fields, grazing water buffalo, and towering limestone karsts creating a postcard-perfect backdrop.

Tam Coc Boat Ride: Our first stop was the iconic Tam Coc boat ride. Sitting in a traditional sampan rowed by skilled locals (many rowing with their feet!), we glided along the Ngo Dong River, passing through caves and surrounded by stunning limestone cliffs. The serenity of the water and the beauty of the natural surroundings were absolutely mesmerising.

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital: Next, we visited Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam. This historic site, nestled amidst scenic mountains, gave us a glimpse into the country’s rich past. We explored the temples dedicated to Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang and Emperor Le Dai Hanh, marveling at the intricate carvings and learning about the history of the Dinh and Le dynasties.

Optional Visit to Mua Caves

For those seeking a bit of adventure, the Mua Caves is a must-visit. Climbing the 500 stone steps to the top was challenging, but the panoramic view of the Tam Coc valley was worth every effort. From the summit, we were rewarded with a bird’s-eye view of the meandering river and the lush landscape, making it a perfect spot for photos.

The day ended with a peaceful drive back to Hanoi, our minds filled with memories of Tam Coc’s stunning landscapes and Hoa Lu’s rich history. It was an unforgettable journey into the heart of Vietnam’s cultural and natural heritage.

Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, welcomed us with its emerald-green waters and towering limestone islands, a natural wonder formed over millions of years.
