About Bidar

Bidar, located about 130 km from Hyderabad, finds a prominent position in the Archeological Survey of India. The historical significance of this place comes from its mention in the Hindu epic of Mahabharata. The Bidar fortress, built out of red laterite stone, is a popular tourist haunt and a remnant of the 15th century construction by Ala-ud-din Bahman. The main attractions include the several mahals in the fort complex, most notably, the Rangeen Mahal. Even though Rangeen Mahal is only a shadow of its former glory, some imagination can take you back to the good old days. The Takht Mahal and Tarkash Mahal are also among the highlights. The Solah Khamba mosque or as it is popularly known, Zanani Masjid is one of the largest mosques in India, characterised by Islamic architectural uses of domes, archs and columns. The massive Bahmani tombs, and the ruins of the Mahmud Gawan Madrasa are other attractions that speak volumes of history. Pay a visit to the Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib and don't forget to savour the langar served by sevaks. Those looking to get their hands on the famed Bidri craft, the old market is your place.
