We are always in search of offbeat places where we can visit and spend some time amidst the nature. Our search for such places often takes us to some wonderful destinations where we not only enjoy the beauty of the nature, but also the amazing hospitality of the local people. We visited Rongbull or Rangbull recently and were totally awed by this serene and beautiful mountain hamlet.

Tucked away in the lush green tea gardens of Darjeeling Hills, Rongbull is located near Ghoom. Rongbull is a place where time stands still and the beauty of the hills is omnipresent. And in this beautiful heaven, we stayed at the Rainbow Valley Resort within the Kalej Valley Tea Estate.

Darjeeling is known for its lush rolling tea gardens. Kalej Valley Tea Estate is one of the majestic tea gardens of Darjeeling. nature has indeed blessed this place and spending a couple of days at Rongbull will be an ideal getaway from the bustle of daily life—something that all of us city dwellers crave! And with that, you can also enjoy the famous Darjeeling tea and the delectable Nepali cuisine served at the Rainbow Valley Resort.

Things to do at Rongbull

1. Visit the tea gardens

The beauty of Rongbull lies in its verdant tea gardens and the blue-green mountains. While you are there, go for a walk amidst the tea gardens and get a great view of the valley. Walk along the tea shrubs and if it is the picking season, you will find workers picking tea leaves. You can try picking tea leaves and even pose for a few pictures. Take a visit to the local tea factory to get a view of how the leaves end up in the cup.

2. Visit the waterfall

A short hike will take you to the Rainbow Waterfall, also known as the Indrani Waterfalls by the locals. It is said that there is a perennial rainbow at the base of the waterfall. The place is a picnic spot for the locals as well.

3. Go for bird watching

Rongbull is a great place for watching exotic species of Himalayan birds. In fact, every morning, you will be woken up by the chirping of birds. You can go for bird watching in the nearby forests where you can see species like Minivet, Khalij pheasants, owlets, babblers, thrush and many more.

4. Go to the Tiger Hill for a view of the majestic sunrise

Tiger Hill is a famous spot in Darjeeling for watching the sunrise. Tiger Hill is just 10 km from Rongbull. You can just hire a car and visit Tiger Hill and save yourself a place to watch the magnificent sunrise over the Kanchenjunga ranges.

5. Take a day trip to Darjeeling and Ghoom

Rongbull can be a great alternative stay in place of Darjeeling. if you want to avoid the rush of Darjeeling, you can stay at Rongbull. From here, you can make day trips to Darjeeling and visit the various attractions of Darjeeling. You can also visit the Ghoom Monastery. Take a toy train ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom or take the joy ride from Darjeeling to Batasia Loop.

Rongbull can be a great getaway where you can spend a couple of days amidst the hills and tea gardens. The cottages are pretty and the adjoining farms and gardens are just as picturesque as well. The days spent at Rongbull will be definitely cherished by you just as we loved every moment of it.

How to reach Rongbull

Rongbull is located only 15 km from the main town of Darjeeling. From Siliguri, you have to take the road towards Darjeeling via Kurseong. After crossing Kurseong and Sonada, keep an eye for Rongbull Bazar. From there it is another 5 km to the resort. If you are coming from Darjeeling, cross Ghoom and travel for another 4 km to find Rongbull Bazar.

The nearest airport is Bagdogra airport and the nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). From Bagdogra, you have to come to Siliguri. From both NJP and Siliguri, you will get shared sumo cars towards Darjeeling by which you can travel to Rongbull Bazar. From there, get a local taxi to the resort. You can also get private cab from Bagdogra, NJP and Siliguri towards Darjeeling and Rongbull.

Best time to visit Rongbull

You can visit Rongbull any time of the year. The monsoon brings new leaves to tea bushes and forests and the whole area looks green and fresh. The winters are known for clear weather and great mountain views. During the summer, the weather remains cool and is the busiest part of the year in terms of tourists.
