For a winter trip, at least 5 days are required in Bannf. Lake Minnewanka, Castle Junction, and Peyto Lake have proven to be the right spots to see aurora borealis near Banff. I would suggest you to live near the national park as there are some really good places to explore there. Don't go for the town.
