Hey, I've been to 6 solo trips this year - and here's what I'd suggest:
1. PACK LIGHT - always, a backpack with a small sling/satchel should suffice, even if it's a 2 weak holiday. Trust me on this, you don't want to carry a heavy suitcase, since many metro stations don't have elevators. 2. If you're in Europe, you won't have to purchase an international SIM card/data. Since most cities have free public wifi. 3. I always recommend people to stay in hostels when traveling solo - it's affordable, and totally worth getting suggestions from locals. You always end up making new friends there, so you won't really be alone. 4. Check out hostels on hostelworld.com, but reserve a room directly from the hostel's website, it's cheaper. 5. POWERBANK IS A MUST! 6. Avoid carrying too much cash, although all hostels offer lockers, it's a safer option to have a FOREX card with you. 7. WALK WALK WALK! The best way to explore a city is on foot - if the weather permits. You never know what you might discover along the way. 8. Be careful how, where and with whom you hitchhike. I usually pick families or an elderly person- Feels safe. Also, avoid hitchhiking on highways for long distance, it's mostly safe in Europe. But if you're traveling, you don't want to waste your time looking for a ride. 9. If you're traveling in Europe - Flixbus is one of the cheapest way to travel to different cities/countries. 10. Don't get scammed! There are people who'd ask you to hold a small bouquet/souvenir and expect you to pay. Just avoid, and continue to walk. 11. Always carry your hostel/hotel card with you, in case you get wasted, and can't remember your way back. 12. When in Europe, respect the traffic signals. Otherwise, you'll have to pay a heavy fine. 13. Tap water is safe to drink in Europe. In India, you know, it's not. 14. If you're a student, you get tickets at a discounted price in Europe. Ok, this is an unethical hack - but you can try to show a fake student ID card, and they MIGHT just accept it. Since they're not so strict about it. 15. ENJOY! Don't get bored even if you're alone. It's an experience in itself. 16. I usually travel by word of mouth. Every place(museum/park/cafe) I visit, I try to strike up a conversation with a fellow local/traveler, and ask what's the best place they've visited in that city. ALWAYS WORKS. 17. Don't be a creep in point number 16. 18. Check the weather of the destination before you pack. If it's mild and warm, I'd just carry 2-3 pair of shorts and multiple shirts/t-shirts. Honestly, nobody cares how you're dressed. 19. Always have some snacks with you in case you plan on exploring cities by foot. 20. You don't have to visit every tourist destination every day, sometimes it's okay to even just not do anything. 21. If it's your first solo trip, I would kind of advice you to plan it in advance. But sometimes it's better to not have a plan. Because you can't really predict how long you'd want to stay in a city you've never visited. 22. Spontaneous planning is fun, until it backfires. Travelling solo can be liberating, exciting, experimental and boundless freedom for all types of travellers. For me, it is a new experience where I can navigate my path across the world on my own. If you are planning to travel solo for the first time, I would like to pass on the tips that I remember and follow whenever I travel solo. Safety is a priority! No matter what kind of a traveller you might be, safety is a major concern and picking the right destination for your solo trip can make all the difference. Whenever you're travelling solo, it is better to keep in touch with someone you trust and share the whereabouts. Travel insurance is also a great option for solo travellers for unforeseen emergencies during the tours. Indulge like a local. Researching about the native sense of the place and learning common phrases in the local language is a great gesture to show that you're adapting to the culture of the place. Simple phrases like 'hello, thank you, sorry, please help me with' will help you to survive the new place in a better manner. Be surrounded by people. Whether it is about staying or going around, be open to new people, especially locals and natives on your solo adventure. Solo traveling can be really great and be an experience itself. There are a few tips to help you:- 1. Do not over pack: Carry only the eesentials. A couple pair of jeans and two parini shorts can go a long way. Dont compromise on shoes. you may walk a lot explore ng. So pack the pair thats most comfortable. 2. Carry power bank: smart phones batteries font last long specially when you will be using internet. So always carry fully charger power back and if possible a basic phone that can be used for calls when your smart phone battery dies. believe me, it happens a lot. 3. Stay: for solo travel hostels are the best. you can get a clean and comfortable bed, free wifi, a basic kitchen and like minded traveler for company. or you can try couchsurfing to find someone to host you. 4. ask for help: people are generally helpful. do ask for help. even if you donor speak the same language. I have travelled solo through Tamilnadu and Kerala without knowing the local language. shesher you need to know which bus to take,or the island to stop by the today shop, or the way to the market, just ask and help will be offerer to you. 5. Be open: The best part of travelling solo is the freedom. So don't restrict yourself. make changes to your travel plans. Change routes. Take a train instead of bus. the motto is to enjoy yourself. Just go out and all will be set.
