Open tickets are not accepted. JUST BOOK your trip but DO NOT PURCHASE your tickets until the visa has been approved. For background, Schengen zone generally requires applicants to apply for a visa in the country of their “main destination” of travel

This is a question which has haunted me during my time when I was trying to do the same for France. The simple answer to your question is yes! The Visa website guides you to not book your flight before getting your visa, which absolutely makes sense. All you have to do is reserve your flight by doing a dummy booking. However, inorder to do a dummy booking you need to know a travel agent who can do that for you. I suggest not going through that hassle and using the links below to get it done. https://schengenflightreservationvisa.com/ or https://travelvisabookings.com/ Both of them are good. It's a quick and easy solution. Hope you have a good time travelling!
