It's better to wear full trekking pants in the monsoons in the western ghats. If you get leeches stuck on despite that, salt is an effective way to get them off.

Salt pouches are quite effective. But prevention is perhaps better. You can wear Gum Boots and along with proper trekking gear

Carry a little salt wrapped in a cotton clothe and keep it with yourself. Just rub it when you find any leech. Other than that gumboots helps.

Best option is to apply salt on them
second best is to heat them up with fire, a lighter or match maybe.
