I have been to New Zealand, what exactly you want to know? Its a developed country, so in terms of safety, very very safe. If you are driving, follow the rules strictly... Hitch hiking is very common, you can do that safely. It is an expensive country, even if you plan to stay in hostels it won't be cheap as such, however hostels are quiet nice with good facilities

There's a lot to do in Auckland.. My brother lives there and is settled.. You can have both mountains and beach vibes together at some places..
