Gokarna is a great choice. There are plenty of hostels and hotels for a budget stay. There are mainly two beaches Om and Kudle. Kudle has good food and a lot of shacks right next to the beach. https://www.tripoto.com/gokarna this link has everything you need to know to plan your trip to Gokarna.

Stay - If you want budget stays, you can opt for hostels. They provide beds in dorms at reasonable price.
For Gokarna, there is Zostel, HostelLife, Trippr etc.
You can opt for camp stays as well Transportation -
There's auto available for land commute. Otherwise, ferry/boat also operates for beaches
You can do a beach trek, so transportation is not generally needed. Locations - The beach trek covers Belekan, Paradise, Half Moon, Om, Kudle Beach
It's an easy beginners trek. You hike through the hills to arrive at the next beach.
Om Beach is the major beach, mostly crowded but offers a good sunset point.
You can see the OM shaped symbol as well and spot dolphins if you're lucky.
Try visiting Nirvana and Gokarna Main Beach as well. They are comparatively less crowded. Small one day trip can be made to Murudeshwar, it's nearby only. The silhouette of the Shiva statue can be seen during sunset from the 18th floor of the temple gate. If nothing works, you can book a tour online, there are many platforms available.
