Have you considered Couchsurfing as an option? AirBnBs can be great too if you're looking at non-hotel alternatives.

Also, you could check out Hostels if you're looking at cost-effective options.

It does help if you have previous reviews, but they aren't strictly necessary. You've to cast a wide net with Couchsurfing. You'll be amazed how warm people can be.
