(i) Try to look for female hosts in your destination. Actually, most female hosts prefer to provide accommodation to other women so you shouldn't have a tough time finding female hosts.
(ii) If you opt to contact male hosts then go thoroughly go through their profile. Put special emphasize on male hosts with good reviews from other female couchsurfers who have stayed with them. If they accept your request then chat with them for a few days prior to staying with them. Follow your gut feeling based on the chats. One thing I absolutely recommend is to not send requests to male hosts who have no reviews from other female couchsurfers.
