Yes the hitchhiking culture is still alive. You just need to check that place you planning to hitchhike from has no law against it. If that's sorted, just get to the highway, decide the route and start waving your thumb. In some places people just don't appreciate the thumb and want to see some currency instead. I hitchhiked last year from Plettenberg to Port Elizabeth in South Africa.
