Going via Shimla is the only option. But snow may affect the roads in Jan for the buses. So if the roads are closed, buses could be canceled.

I don't think the Manali kaza road will be open at this time.. it will only be open after June.. I guess

The Manali route might be closed due to snow. Check with locals before going.

Yes, going to Spiti in January means that you will have to go via Shimla and return the same way. Places like Sangla, Chitkul, Losar, Chandratal, Kunzum Pass and Batal would have to be left out of the itinerary.

It is possible to go to Kaza through this route in December end, however, it totally depends on the weather conditions. You will only be able to go till Kalpa if it starts snowing. Also, it is very cold at that time and most of the hotels are closed. Just be prepared in advance. There are two routes to Spiti Valley - 1. From Manali over Rohtang and Kunzum Pass - 10–12hrs - Open from June to October 15th -leaves at 4 am from Manali 2. From Shimla thro4 am Reckong Peo - Day 1- Shimla to Reckong Peo - 8hrs - several buses are available. Day 2- Reckong Peo to Kaza - 10 hrs - Open throughout the year - leaves at 7 am throughout long Peo Bus-stand Once7 amu’re in Spiti VallBus-standyday evening you have buses to Kibber, Losar, Lhalung, Pin valley, and Tabo. Have a safe and wonderful, journey!

Hey Akhil, Best and most scenic route to reach Spiti Valley is via Manali. You can also do a round trip: Manali->Spiti Valley->Shimla. The best time to visit Spiti is from June -September as road via Manali remains closed in the rest of the months but you can go via Shimla. Happy travelling!!!!!

Hi Akhil The routes via Manali are closed. The other option is that you go via Shimla. But not very sure if that route is closed or open. Maybe till Jan end the route will open.

In winters, Spiti is accessible only from the Shimla side. The available route passes through Shimla – Narkanda – Rampur – Kalpa - Nako-Giu Village - Tabo Village – Dhankar - Pin Valley (Mud Village) – Kaza Pros: - Spiti is not visited by many travellers during the winter months, making it the perfect time for those who are seeking mountainside solitude. - For those interested in experiencing extreme winter adventures, this is the best time to visit Spiti valley to explore winter treks here and even catch live snowfall. - Those interested in wildlife can hope to spot snow leopards during this time. Con’s: - The weather is extremely harsh and brutal during winters. Those who cannot handle the blood-curdling cold should avoid venturing to Spiti in winters. - Almost all the hotels, cafes, and markets are closed during winters. Your best bet will be homestays. You shouldn’t expect great facilities at this time. - Whichever hotels and homestays are functional will charge exorbitant prices. Don’t expect a budget stay during winters. - Due to heavy snow, most of the roads will be blocked or in bad condition. They are slippery due to frost, slushy mud, and water crossings. Keep a few buffer days in hand if travelling during these months to avoid delays caused due to these conditions. - Due to sub-zero temperatures, don’t expect running water. You will have to make do with dry toilets and must be prepared to go for many days without taking a bath. - There are electricity fluctuations during this time. Bonfires or warm kitchen areas will be your place to be! - The ATMs might be out of order due to the valley being cut-off and unavailability of electricity. - The phones will have intermittent coverage due to heavy snow cover. So prepare to remain cut-off for a while.
