Chennai will be hot during April. You can visit nearby places like Tada, Nagalapuram Falls, Pichavaram Mangrove, Pulicat Lakes. Start very early and reach the place and be back before it gets too hot.

You can visit Pondicherry. It's around 4 hrs drive from Chennai. You can also visit Ooty, Coomoor which is overnight journey from Chennai.
