Sri Lanka is absolutely safe and is very beautiful :) I travelled to the island last summer and spent an over all of 30,000/- flights inclusive. Youve, got to book flights ahead to save cost, as the prices fluctuate like crazy! Staying and your local Sri Lanka expenses of food and maybe sightseeing are not worrisome at all. Happy travels ;)

Yes. I recently visited Sri Lanka and was really amazed to see how much the Govt. takes effort in ensuring a safe environment for tourists. The local police authorities are also very helpful and some stringent laws are in place to safeguard the interest of the tourists. so atleast all the places that I visited starting from Pollunaruwa to Kandy to all the way to South and then to Colombo my experience was good. North might be a little tricky though specially Jaffna. However some frauds and scams do happen at some places. From those you need to cautious. And yes coming to the cost part, it will be cheaper if you opt for public transport but not all places are well connected with buses. Auto rickshaw s are costly. At some of the destination s you can hire a bike or a scooty. Coming to the flight part, the cost can be significantly less if to and fro is booked from Chennai.
