You can directly take a cab from airport or railway station at guwahati. Can would be more easily accessible as they are right outside major transport hubs. You can actually take a sharing ride all the way to shillong. Hope this helps.

Thanks!
Book a cab for your whole ride as there is lot of problem for transportation. Dawki is the main tourist place bt extremely crowded bt famous. Where the other one is calm and quite place. If you want to stay away from hustle bustle go for shanpedong...Sharing cabs are also available. If you are coming in a group it will be beneficial for you.

From my experience I would suggest you to take a cab locally for your entire duration. (In case u need a cab I can pass on the driver's no. I had hired) To travel from Assam to Meghalaya take a local bus if u are on a budget trip. Dawki is too beautiful so dont miss it, also the boating is awesome. It is shared between india and Bangladesh so also visit the Indo Bangladesh border. Wangala can be witnessed in Meghalaya and Assam both.
