Being a Keralite i would suggest head to Varkala instead of Kovalam as the beautiful cliff side beach is the best place in Kerala to be during Christmas and New Year. The vibe and the music will be great and there will be total fun. There is a new Zostel also.

Visit Varkala beach and treat yourself with good ayurvedic massage, beautiful cafes.
also visit Munroe island for beautiful backwater and sunrise.
