Depends on your budget. You will get good hostels at the city center (near Dam's square). you can also stay near Museumplein. However, if you want to stay in standard hotels with own room (instead of dorms) at affordable rates you can check out some places near Amstelveen. Amsterdam can get crowded, Amstelveen is very peaceful and with IAmsterdam card you get unlimited free transport.
