Depends on your budget. You will get good hostels at the city center (near Dam's square). you can also stay near Museumplein. However, if you want to stay in standard hotels with own room (instead of dorms) at affordable rates you can check out some places near Amstelveen. Hi Sanghamitra, depending on your budget and preference, you may want to consider staying around the Old Centre which is close to prominent shopping area and nightlife areas. If you would like views of the Canals, you may head to the slight to the west at Raadhuisstraat.
