Bern's Old Town was named a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1983 due to its well-preserved medieval city core. Despite being perched on a cliff with the stunning blue waters of the Aare River surrounding it on three sides, the old town has managed to keep much of its medieval charm. There are kilometers of covered arcade sidewalks lining the cobblestone streets.
