Sukhna Lake is situated in Chandigarh, India, is a small reservoir at the foothills of the Himalayas, the Shivalik slopes. This 3 km² rainfed lake was made in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a regular stream descending from the Shivalik Hills. The lake was made by Le Corbusier and the Chief Engineer P L Verma. To safeguard its quietness Corbusier demanded that the highest point of the dam (promenade) to be disallowed for vehicular traffic. Sukhna is a conjoined piece of the city of Chandigarh. Le Corbusier had predicted that the city's inhabitants would be drawn it for the 'care of the body and spirit'. The city organizers were profoundly joined to the lake. To such an extent that Pierre Jeanneret's fiery debris were inundated in the lake in 1970, according to his wishes by his niece. The lake is confronting major issues like weed abundance, catchment sufficiency and silting that are essentially contracting its size and depth of the lake.

I had never seen Sukhna Lake at night I was just amazed by how nice it looked with the lighting in the night. After a halt of half an hour or so we went back to Adhiraj's home. We had wonderful dinner at his home and after enjoying a wonderfully nice movie we went to our cozy beds.It is not in Amit's dictionary to wake up early not at least in the holidays so we we were not able to leave before 10:30 pm.The plan took a slight change after talking to Adhiraj's dad and a lesser known Dagshai was added to our list while Timber Trail was left for the end. Although Dagshai is just 47 km away we reached there at noon because of the construction taking place.

Classified as a lake, but a reservoir in geographical terms, Sukhna Lake is a three-square-km large water body at the foothills of the Himalayas. It is Chandigarh's most-visited tourist place and is full of tourists and natives alike on pleasant afternoons and evenings. Sukhna has something for everyone. While the serious walkers and runners pursue their daily exercise regimes here, families can be seen picnicking or strolling around with eatables in their hands. You can go boating with your lover, or birdwatch, or just walk around and relax.

3. Sukhna LakeAt the foothills of the Shivalik Hills, the lake is created by damming the Sukhna Choe. A serene spot to spend quiet evenings, the Sukhna is a sanctuary to exotic migratory birds too. On short trip from Delhi to Chandigarh, Sukhna lake is an ideal spot to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

We visited Sukhna Lake and Rock garden, both were typical tourist destination spots. Sukhna Lake has a promenade where people can sit along and enjoy the beautiful view of the lake. There is a 3 kms walk one can take along the lake to enjoy the beauty. One can just sit over there and experience timelessness.

The 3km long beautiful manmade Sukhna lake offers a view of the foothills of Shivalik range. The well maintained and clean surroundings of lush trees add to the beauty of this place. Sit by the lake and enjoy the cool breeze or go boating! History: This lake was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills. Originally the seasonal flow entered the lake directly causing heavy siltation. To check the inflow of silt, land measuring 2542 hectares was acquired in the catchments area and put under vegetation. Le Corbusier’s greatest creation, his vision for Sukhna lake still lives on. Carrying on his legacy, till date no motor boats are allowed in the lake and neither are any motor vehicles on the promenade.

Personally, I like this place the most. It's a good place to go in evening & spend some time there… If you are there on Sunday, don’t miss the cultural program by Chandigarh Tourism Dept.

This is one of the most beautiful lake which lies in the foothills of Shivalik Hills. It is a man made lake which was created during 1958 and it is about 3 kms long and where a stream called Sukhna Choe was dammed and thus it gave rise to the Sukhna Lake. It is a peaceful and beautiful picnic spot where the scenic waterfront and the calling of birds adds to the serene atmosphere. It is also a meeting spot for the peoples who can relax and find peace of mind after a long hardworking day.

At the entrance to the Sukhna Lake Chandigarh one reads Corbusier’s Edict of the Lake. “The founders of Chandigarh have offered this Chandigarh lake and dam to the citizens of the new city so that they may escape the humdrum of the city life and enjoy the beauty of nature in peace and silence.” The curvilinear profile of the promenade along the banks of lake Sukhna hums with activity from dawn to dusk, reflecting changing moods of the day. The tree-shaded promenade is a favorite spot to stroll and enjoy the tranquil ambience. This manmade lake lies in the base of the majestic Shivalik range and is a desired picnic location. To pursue the challenging activities like yachting, boating, and water skiing one would not get a better place. Walking around the curvilinear profile of the lake you'd come across various cafes and rides.

Finally, after soaking in quite the taste of Amritsar, the journey found a home back to where it almost began. At Chandigarh, I stopped by Sukhna lake, as it was time for sunset. This placid lake dances along with waves that are so calm that everything merges languorously in it.
