Today, Cancun is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and luxurious resorts. It’s hard to imagine that just a little over 40 years, this place was no more than a coconut plantation with only three residents. Cancun’s story starts in the late 60s, when a group of Mexican economists undertook a study to find an ideal travel destination in order to increase tourism and income within the country. Once the research was complete, the economists analyzed the data and concluded that Cancun was the most desirable site in Mexico. Four short decades later, the area is home to more than 700.000 people, and generates a third of country’s overall tourism revenue. Not bad for a former coconut plantation.
