I have been there, done that. I was half broke and could not afford to rent a bike (Plus there are risks involved), so I called up a friend of mine who lived in Dharamshala, HP, and asked him to lend me his bike for Ladakh. He said yes. But as recommended by Dheeraj from 'Devilonwheels', I took an NOC (Just ask him to write that the bike is for private use only and is registered under his name) from him to avoid any hiccups that the Ladakh bikers' union might give me. All went well. Never was I stopped by anyone to verify whether the bike was mine or not. Also, it is really not necessary for you to travel with a travel agency. They can't really help you if, god forbids, happens to you. They usually take a backup vehicle where you can put all your luggage. And that is pretty much it. Do carry some basic tools and know the basic repairs like, plugging a puncture, replacing spark plugs, basic electrical stuff and you are good to go. Also, wear your riding gears. if you do not have any, message me (I'm an affiliate to many riding gears brands). I'll get you discount. Hope it helps, buddy!
