Hi Varsha,
Finland has clearer skies when compared to Norway but Norway is a more convenient as a base. As we know the Northern lights can be unpredictable you can check for updates here: http://www.aurora-service.eu/aurora-forecast/
Keep exploring!
Mostly you can see northern lights in north part of finland comparivatily than Norway. it totally depends on luck you have on that. but for sure you can witness it if you spend enough time. have a nice trip.
Ideally the Finnish/Swedish Lapland (Abisko National Park) is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights but the catch is, it is extremely expensive. If budget is a constraint, then either Norway or Iceland is a good option (but unfortunately Iceland needs to be ruled out since your friend shall be in Sweden). Porjus or Lulea are the other options in Sweden.
Hello varsha,
There are many places that you can go in Norway to see them.
There is a band in the nordic countries, above which they are visible. Some of the places that fall in that category are:
Bodo, lofoten Islands, Alta,Andoya,Senja, Harstad, Kirkenes,Lakselv,Narvik, and the Northern lights capital, Tromso.
I chose to go to Tromso and belive me it was amazing. But there is high chance of also not being able to see them because of multiple factors! So you really have to be lucky to see them.
I did not book any tour, we just drove off, into the wilderness and had the amazing show on display! you can read about my experience here:

Finland is nice place becouse you can drink booze and nobody wont care too much if you are in tipsy.
Both countries are extensible, but that you probably allready know about.
In Finland I would recommend to visit Helsinki, see it's nicest views. And then go to Tampere, have dub step / drum n bass / etc party, and then maybe continue my journey to towards lapland. And maybe take few days hike on the mountains.
Northern Sweden and Finland:-
Sweden’s northernmost town of Kiruna is a gateway for nearby attractions. There is the ICEHOTEL, mountainous Abisko National Park, the local Sami culture, and plentiful reindeer. A short drive from the town takes you to a good spot for aurora viewing. The weather here is much more stable than the Norwegian coast, but it’s colder too.
In Finland’s Lapland region, Rovaniemi serves as a gateway town to nearby national parks where in winter you can spot frozen snow-covered trees called Tykky sculptures along with the northern lights.
Hello varsha,
I think Finland is better. You can go to Oulu.

Oulu, a serene city with stunning views, is situated in northern Finland near the mouth of the Olujöki River, an old trading hub, and along the Gulf of Bothnia. The Oulujoki River, which rises from Lake Oulujärvi in the area where Oulu is located, bears the city's name.

you will be able to see the lights more than Norway.
