The Government has announced plans to launch two Mega Adventure Trails in the country this year- the Ganga Trail and the Northwestern Himalayas Trail. These plans were unveiled by Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy on Sunday, 2nd April, while addressing a session at the G-20 tourism working group meeting in Siliguri, West Bengal.
The government is giving a major push to adventure tourism, promoting it at the G-20 tourism working group meeting being held in Siliguri and Darjeeling. The minister said that India's topography provides an ideal destination for sustainable adventure tourism. He added that with a 7,000-km coastline, 70 per cent of the Himalayas, about 700 kilometres of rivers, and desert and cold desert in Ladakh, there were ample opportunities for a variety of adventure activities for both domestic and foreign tourists.
Another government official has revealed that many more trails are in the offing and expected to be launched soon. There will be the Narmada Trail from Amarkantak to Arabian Sea, Kaveri River Trail, West Coast Trail from Kutch to Kanyakumari, and East Coast Trail from West Bengal to KanyaKumari.
These new adventure trails are expected to provide sustainable tourism and livelihood opportunities to a large section of people in these areas.
