Kochi { Cochin / Ernakulam } the gateway to Kerala, sits majestically on the shores of Arabian Sea, welcoming tourists who fly into Kochi International Airport from various faraway lands, seeking new experiences in food, culture, tradition, hidden islands, ayurvedic massages and so on, which are unique to Kerala.

Kochi has a very long and diverse history which began when Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed, then Dutch moving in later, followed by the British and to the Mughal ruler Hyder Ali – all the while remaining a Princely state named Kingdom of Cochin and ruled by the Royals. And today Kochi is a cultural potpourri of all those who ruled Cochin and have left a mark on its soils.

Rich interiors of the Synagogue

1. Paradesi Synagogue - Mattancherry is a go-to place while in Kochi for it holds the roots of history. The Jewish Synagogue built in 1568 is an architectural marvel with ample usage of brass, wood and rare antiques. The sunlight reflecting through the huge glass chandeliers and the patterned tiles creates a mystical aura inside. One should enter bare foot inside the synagogue which is closed on Fridays and Saturdays.

2. Mattancherry Palace - lies next door to the Jewish Synagogue and was built in 1555 by the Portuguese as a gift to the King Veera Kerala Varma of Kochi. It displays spacious halls, huge collection of murals with a shrine for “Pazhayanur Bhagavathi’’ in the centre. The most unique feature is the flooring , called the Traditional Kerala flooring made with burnt coconut shells, egg white, lime, charcoal etc and looks like black marble. With a small museum and artefacts inside, it has a simple charm and elegant look. It is open on all days, except Fridays.

4. Kerala Dum Biriyani - Do not miss the chance to try out the authentic Kerala Dum Biriyani at Fort Kochi, Kayee’s Rahmathulla Hotel which is a super hit with locals and tourists alike. With the third generation running this eatery and a VIP clientele (google it for more info), Biriyani is served with dates pickle, pappad and onion rings. Don’t be put off by the unassuming look or the affordable prices. Equally gaining popularity is Jeff Biriyani at Pyary junction, Thoppumpady, where foodies swear by its Afghani Chicken along with special items on its menu on Sundays. For more lavish choices Keerikkadans restaurant in Panampilly nagar is an excellent choice.
