Weekend Getaways from Velaneshwar
At MTDC resort VelneshwarThe resort is situated on a highland just besides the beach. One can see the Arabian Sea from every castle located inside the resort. The rooms are having a typical octagonal shape with gallery facing the sea. A number of child playing equipments are installed in open spaces.Electrical fittings in rooms are age old and bed is a permanent structure built with cement-concrete. Not surprising in government owned property. Home made food outlets near beach offer better option than resort canteen.Beach is 5 min. walk away from the resort. It is clean and untouched by human interventions. Watching Sun set was amazing.

Trust me on this, I would rate Malgund beach as one of the most underrated beaches I have ever seen. Yes, I have been to Goa, Beaches of Kerala, Marina, kashid, Alibaug, Kihim and other beaches of Maharastra. But Malgund will remain my favourite. If you are someone who feels that nature gives you peace, if you are someone who wants to stay away from crowded places, if you are someone who wants to explore new, less crowded places as a traveller than be amongst the crowd as a tourist, this is your best getaway!
I guess I've already mentioned that we love to walk?! :) We had heard of a pathway between City Palace and Jaigarh Fort, and inveterate walkers that we are, we went looking for the sign and were brave enough to duck into the dark doorways that it pointed to. And my, weren't we glad we did! A lovely winding path took us all the way to Jaigarh, opening up very different views of both mighty forts with each step. It wasn't very long, but I'd still call it a mini-trek!
Velneshwar is a quiet secluded Konkan beach located at 290km from Mumbai. On one of my Mumbai trips, we ganged up for an offbeat trip where we would be the only ones having our own sweet time.Suggested by a local friend, we set off for a long journey in a mini bus to Velneshwar. It was not exactly hot then, bit cooler than how the weather usually is. The time did not matter since we were all friends and friends of friends having our break from this boring life.
MALGUNDThe cleanest beach I have ever seen. More sort of a private beach open to public. What surprises me is that not even one plastic bottle or piece of paper did I come through. No thrash, clean water, clear sky, soothing sun rays. I just did not know that there is a beach like this in the malvan coast. Maximum 20 people did we find in the whole stretch of 3-4 kms. The nature was so good that we got high just by seeing the colour of the water and sun saying a 'hi' from the top! There were more footprints of birds than footprints of human beings, there were more gangs of hermit crabs than gangs of drunk people littering the beach. So, if you really want an escape from the maddening crowd, visit this place! I visited it on a weekend and the *no crowd* characterstic surprised me.
Jaigad Light House
My next day was planned to visit the Jaigad light house. In my many travels that I have done I honestly had never had been to a light house that was some 800 years old. Another driving of 2 hours from Ratnagiri and you were at the Jaigad light house .As i climbed up on the stairs to get on to the top I could feel my heart beat fast for I knew what I would see now would change my life ....and YES it did …the view from the top of the light house was stunning - The Arabian sea all sparkling and blue grey in the monsoon skies, surrounded by greens and Ghats. A site that can only be experienced if you are there in the midst of it. The expanse of the Horizon- endless!
