Just 5 hours away from Delhi lies one of the largest fort in India. As the legend goes the fort was built by Suraj Sen in 3CE and the city got its name from a saint Gwalipa who saved the king from leprosy by offering him sacred water from suraj kund. The king, in return named the town after him. The fort was ruled by 110 Kings from Sen, Gurjaras, Mughals to Marathas. Every building in the fort tells a tale of a different time and era.
Morning: For best experience hire a guide, well not just anyone ask for “Kaalu the Talent” this boy received no formal education and still talks in seven Different languages you might have seen him on news or youtube, you’ll find him on the cigarette shop just outside the ticket gates. Ask him to give a tour of the whole fort and not just the palaces and kunds. It is advisable to spend a day at fort, go early it’s the best time trust me and buy light and sound show tickets for evening.
Lunch : Kwality Restaurant, City Centre. Try Chicken Malmal and chicken tikka masala. If you have time to kill explore Gujri Mahal.
Evening: Light and sound show on the fort. Spiritual ones can also go to the gurudawara.
Stay: stay in Taj Usha Kiran Palace, it was built by Scindia’s as a guest house. My choice is a suite, they come attached with a private pool. The hotel is a heritage hotel and is the best place to stay in Gwalior. But don’t try food its shit. Get Alcohol from wine shop, order a pizza from dominos. Party hard and sleep tight.
Wake up early and head to Maharaja Bada, it’s a market I know the time is pretty odd but that’s the time when the city is most beautiful in the fresh morning dew. The seven buildings in Maharaja Bada portrays architecture of 7 different countries.
Breakfast: Head to SS Kachori wala and try Bedai, Kachori and Samosa. Believe me its not like the one we get in Delhi do try Bedai its only found in the Chambal Region.
After breakfast head to Jai Villas Palace. Palace is also home of Jyotiraditya Scindia and is one of the best palaces in the country. Next stop is Tansen Tomb followed by tomb of Ghaus Mohammad.
Sun is down and It seems we’ve Skipped lunch, well its Sunday and a good cocktail/wine with a fine paired meal will compensate for all mistakes, head for Ten Downing Street Unwind and good night …………end of trip.
