Tucked away in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter lies one of the city’s most thrilling and unique experiences, Hanoi’s famous Train Street. This narrow strip of track is not just a passage for an old train but a bustling hub of life where cafes, shops, and homes stand just inches from the rumbling train. My recent visit to this iconic street was a journey into the vibrant energy of the city, an experience that I won’t soon forget.

How to Get There?

Reaching Train Street is simple and straightforward. I took a Grab Bike straight to the Old Quarter from my hostel, and from there, a short walk led me to the narrow street with tracks. Just walking through the Old Quarter feels like an adventure in itself, but the real magic happens on Train Street.

Arriving Early is Key

Timing is crucial here. Be sure to ask locals or your accommodation about the exact train schedule, especially since there’s a good frequency between 6 pm to 9 pm. The street is lined with quirky, train-themed cafes that serve everything from strong Vietnamese coffee to cold beers. I arrived 30 minutes before the scheduled arrival and found a cozy little spot where I could grab a drink and settle in to wait for the train. As time went by, more travelers joined me, all buzzing with excitement and anticipation for the train’s dramatic approach.

The Wait and the Atmosphere

Waiting for the train on this lively street was half the experience. There’s something enchanting about being in such a unique space, locals go about their daily routines, shop owners chat with regulars, and travelers like me snap photos and sip on drinks. The colorful murals on the walls, the scent of fresh coffee in the air, and the rhythmic hum of the city, it’s a sensory overload in the best way possible.

The Train’s Arrival

When the train finally arrived, it was like a scene out of a movie. The sound of the horn echoed down the track, and everyone quickly moved to the sides as the train came into view. It’s incredible how close the train passes to the cafés and homes, so close you could almost touch it. The entire street seemed to come alive as the train thundered through, rattling the tables and sending a wave of excitement through the crowd.
