Koh Phangan is known as a full moon party destination, and it sure is one of the best places in Asia to party around. But the island of Koh Phangan and nearby have a few beautiful locations, which can be seen only if you look to stay longer and explore. As part of a trail created to explore the trail in the movie 'The Beach', this trip helped us unearth a few destinations that we think you should visit.
1) Ko Wua Ta Lap Trek- If you are in Ko-Samui or Ko-Phangan or Ko-Tao, do ask for a day tour to Angthong Marine Park. It's a series of 42 islands that has limestone rocks and white sand beaches, in between lagoons. This trek has a series of 5 viewing points, depending on your level of athleticism.
2) Chilling at Angthong Marine Park- Angthong Marine National Park is not very well known yet. It has very basic accomadation and has camps/tents for 500 INR a night. The island has a sprawling cover of green, next to a white sand beach.
3) Discovering Koh-Hanuman- Did you know that one of the mountains in that range is an island called Koh Hanuman. Quaint islands like those are chosen for snorkelling and for a quiet lunch by the diving companies. Get a physical map and pick an island and let your 'Robinson Crusoe' moment come quicker than expected.
4) Spending Time at Waterfalls- Phaeng Waterfalls- One of the most serene and beautiful waterfalls in the island of Koh Phangan is the Phaeng Waterfall. You should look to spend the sunset trying to bathe in the golden waters of the base of the waterfall.
5) Ban Tai Beach- One of the lesser known beaches in Koh Phangan, which has enough coconuts and privacy for you to laze around, and bask in the views of the Gulf of Thailand, without anyone bothering to disturb you.
6) Valley View of the Sea- ViewPoint Cafe- When you are in Koh-Phangan, do ask for ViewPoint Cafe to soak in these views, where you feel that you are driving right down in the sloping road into the acquamarine blue sea.
7) Sunsets at Coco Beach- The beach is closer to Leela Beach in Koh Phangan and is part of a resort that exists beyond a hillock. It is close to the madness of Haad-Rin (Full Moon Party Beach), but still not easily discoverable since there is a resort that one needs to wade through to come here. Some of the locals come here to savour the sunsets on a fibre plank that is spread out into the ocean.
8) Walking the Plank at Chumphon- Walking the plank was an excercise pirates and sailors are used to, but here in Thailand its a pleasant excercise to soak in the views of the sea from a little bridge of sorts. Chumphon is a little port that is nestled away in a national park, and was a World War 2 Bunker, which has a beautiful charming village by the sea, and hidden by the mountains.
9) Catching the Emerald Lake in a hidden Lagoon- Did you know that this little lagoon/lake is connected to the sea via the underground. The little hills cover the lagoon on all sides, and it has a tiring hike to be done to see this little view. The Thale Nai saltwater lake, is part of the Angthong Islands trail.
10) Swinging it like the 60's- Head over to Coco Beach, to see the swings between coconut trees, across the expanse of a beautiful coastline by a calm sea. The sea has various shows where the water changes various shades of blue and green depending on the time of the day. The calm and serene beach, coupled with swings, brings a childlike thrill to spending the day like a beach bum.
11) The Standing Stones at Mae-Haad- When you get to Mae Haad beach, the first thing you encounter are the beautiful stones kept on top of one another by this British Couple. The stones are not glued, but kept on top of one another and balanced by checking the centre of gravity.
12) Chilling at Koh Ma Sunset Point- The Sea is calmer this side of the island, which means you can plonk your beach chair right inside the sea, and listen to the sound of waves, and soak in picturesque sunsets
13) Play Songkaran in Koh Tao- While the traditional centres of playing Songkaran, the Thai water festival has been Chiang Mai and Bangkok, one must try playing the festival with a relaxed beach vibe town, and nothing cuts it better than Koh Tao. Do keep in mind that Songkaran comes only once a year, for 3 days around the 13-15th April, in line with the Thai New Year.
