Christmas seemed to have arrived early as blankets of ice sheets draped Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya. The place experienced a sharp fall in temperature as it witnessed a colossal hailstorm followed by thunderstorm and massive rainfall.
As per the latest reports, the streets of the city are enfolded with snowy layers, disrupting traffic movement in the region. But the people seem to greet the snowfall as they are gearing up for the Christmas celebrations this weekend.
A distinct experience at Shillong
Coated with thick snow, the entire landscape of Shillong underwent a transformation. The minimum temperature has surged down to 6 degrees celsius, creating a chilly wintery sensation. The people at Shillong and the visiting tourists are feeling the frosty effect of the snowfall and the icy-cold weather.
The entire hill station has almost turned white; an ideal weather to welcome Christmas. Inspite of the road congestions and traffic disruptions, people seemed to have been greeted by this unanticipated snowfall in the city. Some have even started creating snowmen near their houses.
The weather forecast and predictions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that light to moderate isolated or scattered rains will continue till 24th December Friday, along with thunderstorms and lightning. The sudden change in the weather has been attributed to the cyclone formation near Bangladesh.
Other than Meghalaya, parts of other north-eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura have also experienced persistent rain showers. The hailstorms are predicted to continue till Friday.
