Since childhood there has been a fascination and curiosity about the train journeys. On my recent visit to Chandigarh, I was taken on a weekend trip to Barog and was suggested to visit the Barog station which has been declared UNESCO World Heritage site.

Barog is located in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. The famous Kalka-Shimla toy train is mapped on this route.

The station has a beautiful colour combination in white and blue making it appealing for the eyes. On one side, you will experience the tunnel which is pitch black, the other side is covered with lush green forest cover making it a perfect place for a photoshoot. To help you explore the place in full and experience it's magical beauty at night also, the station has 4 retiring rooms and 1 Shivalik room which can be booked from IRCTC website on per day basis.

Although the station has got some stunning views and is listed on the UNESCO Heritage list, yet the tunnel (commonly referred as tunnel no.33) and the station are tagged as Haunted. Do u know why?
The story behind is that Colonel Barog was incharge of building this tunnel. So, according to his plan he posted labours on each side of the mountain so that when they start digging they will meet at the center. But due to some errors and mis-calculation, the labour of both ends was never able to meet at the centre. Due to his failure in completing the project, he was fined by the Government. He was upset and embarrassed and in utter shame he shot himself. To honor him, his body was buried near the unfinished tunnel. After his death HS Hellington was assigned this project who made a new tunnel about 1km away from the old one. This new tunnel is the longest tunnel among the 103 tunnels on this Kalka Shimla route.

Rumors are there that his ghost is still roaming at the place and tries to chat with unaware strangers. Also, the Government has tried to put a lock on the old construct tunnel but it's always found broken. So, colonel Barog's ghost stories intrigue us to explore but make sure that no one is harmed.
Although the rumors about this tunnel no.33 stays, you should not miss exploring the beauty of this place when in Barog.
How to reach?
Barog station can be reached in two ways one is when you are traveling by train and other by car which you need to park on the road side from where you have to take a narrow path which is approx 500-600 m down slope to reach the station.
There is a minimum amount of platform ticket of 30/-rupees (which may vary) you need to take once you are visiting the station. Also, they have a stall where you can grab some tea , snacks and a sitting area to relax.

**Make sure that you are wearing sports shoes instead of other heels , flats etc. else it will be impossible for you to handle the slopes.
