History and Legend of Karni Mata Temple Udaipur

The Karni Mata Temple Udaipur is located on a hilltop near the Doodh Talai Lake, about 2 km from the city center. The temple was built in the 15th century by Maharana Karan Singh, the ruler of Mewar, in honor of Karni Mata, a female Hindu sage who is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The temple is also the headquarters of the Karni Mata sect, a group of followers who worship her as their patron deity.

The legend behind the temple is that Karni Mata once resurrected her son Lakhan, who had drowned in a pond, by praying to Yama, the god of death. Yama agreed to grant her wish, but on the condition that all her sons and their descendants would be reincarnated as rats, and would live in the temple as her children. Since then, the temple has been home to thousands of rats, who are considered sacred and auspicious by the devotees. It is said that if you spot a white rat among the black ones, you are blessed with good luck and fortune.

The temple is also known for its beautiful architecture and design, which reflects the Rajasthani style. The temple has a marble facade, a silver door, intricate carvings, and a golden dome. The temple complex also has a garden, a pond, and a museum that displays the history and artifacts of the Karni Mata sect.

Karni Mata Temple Udaipur Reviews

After coming back we went straight to Karni mata since it has time of closing ropeway. In between we had Lemon tea from Mangal Chai shop while walking towards karni mata. We hired an auto and as i said earlier min. charge is 100rs going anywhere. Since it was a saturday, we didn't knew that there would be so much of waiting. So they have like 6 Chambers, out of which they offer either regular or couples or group of 4 to 6 people separate. Sabke alag charges hai. We took there regular ones as their price was cheapest i.e 119rs per person. We had to wait till 6 even after reaching there by 4:30 to get our turns on ropeway. Our entire plan of capturing sunset was ruined. No matter we went and had our darshan. Even while coming back they have waiting as per the number. Although it has a proper restaurant for waiting, we had to wait again 45mins to get our turns back. While we wasted so much time waiting we canceled our plan for Jagdish temple and headed to our next booked hotel(Actually hostel) goStops. On the way we had made our deal with the auto guy that covering Sajjangarh palace, leaving us to shop and the to Lunch will give him 500rs. Otherwise best way is rent a scooty which is available in old town easily. We had cancelled our Dinner plan on the night of 10th so we decided to either try Upreor Harigarhpalace. Both are equally good an amazing ambience they had overlooking Lake Pichola and City palace which look beautiful at night with all the lights it turns golden completely. Both were just on walking distance from goStops. We finally settled in Harigarh.
Then we headed to Karni Mata Mandir. On the way you can see Doodh talai. There are two ways to reach there, you can reach there by stairs or by Rope way. We chose Rope way. It cost around 75-100 Rs. per person. We enjoyed the beautiful weather, Scenic and sunset from the temple. There is a telescope to see the different shooting spots and you have to pay him 10 Rs for a minute. We stayed there for some time to enjoy the view of Udaipur. There you can get dressed in Rajasthani attire. and if you feel hungry you can have something in the restaurant up there. that's all for our first day of the trip.Second day started with City Palace visit Second day we went to city palace, the beauty of the palace is beyond words. You need to spend couple of hours from here we took a boat to reach Jag Mandir, it is famous for destination weddings, boat tickets cost 250-350 per person. This place is amazing you feel like a royal in the middle of the lake. You can spend time over here as much as you want because there is no fix time to return, you can take any boat which is going to the palace. after that we went to Lok kala Museum and Shilp gram here you see the rich culture of rajasthan. Our last destinatin of the day was Sajjangarh Palace.
Karni Mata Temple Now Let's talk about witnessing the most dreamy sunset you ever could, shall we? But let me warn you this sunset comes at a price of about an hour hike up a mountain. Yes, you read it right. The city of Lakes has a hike as well. Could we be asking for any more fun? and for the lazy bums out there don't need to worry, they've got cable cars as well to reach the top, but I would recommend you take a hike cause always been a mountain person so..... hehehe. Wait a minute, are we not discussing THEE "Pichola lake boat ride sunset" ?. Well, No. Rather than spending 2k-3k for a 15 Minutes ride, a sunset from the top of a hill from where you can see the sun setting over the white city behind the Aravalli ranges is a much better option in my opinion and the cherry on the top is NO TOURISTS to ruin your sunset photos.!!!
Post Lunch, the auto driver took us to a cable car station named Mansapurna Karni Mata Rope-way (or Doodh Talai ropeway). We waited for our turn for 20 minutes (Long Queues) and then the cable car (with a seating capacity of 6, 90 Rs. per head) took us to the Karni Mata temple. The platform up there offered a panoramic view of the Udaipur city, with lakes and hills on one side and thousands of white houses (as far as you could see) on the other side. After reaching the top, we visited the temple and in about a few minutes, it was time for sunset. We couldn't miss that for the world. So, we just sat there to let that feeling sink in with wind rushing at about 100 miles/hour in the background.
Now if wish to walk all the way up to the temple, you can totally opt for that or there is a ropeway ticketed at INR 110/- per person both ways. Once you have bought your ticket, you have to get it sequenced and then queue up for the cable car. Once you reach atop the hill, the temple provides you an overlook at the entire Udaipur City. The view of the city with the sunrise from this point is magical(so they say). I was still trying to make peace with the rains.
