Make a prebooking of the hotel either with OYO or MMT if you are going during new year eve as at that time it is difficult to get a hotel.
For the cheap accommodation, you can also book zostels or hostels at www.hostelworld.com.
Pack winter clothes like Woollen cap, thermals, woollen socks, gloves, good quality shoes, jackets, woollen sweater, moisturizer etc.

You can book your hotels with booking.com. If you are planing to stay at Rishikesh I recommend Shiv Shakti Hostel, staff is friendly, affordable, very close to laxman Jhula and Tera manzil Temple (Trimbakeshwar Temple).
I suggest you to look for weather forecast and pack your stuffs. You can take warm cloths, comfortable pair of shoes, take one Indian outfit since you are visiting temples, and doing ganga arthi (Even though there is no dress code in temples).

Well I have been to Malaysia and according to me it is full of modern history. I have seen the zoo there and it is worth to visit. I don't prefer visiting the Batu caves. Shopping is good but don't expect to get valuable items from Chinatown. If you need to buy good and cheap things then visit Indian street.
