Umiam Lake Reviews

The ascend, towards the abode of clouds. While driving on the roads, leading to main part of Shillong, you will come across a place so serene called as Barapani.its some 10kms away from the centre point, also from here the traffic starts jamming in. I think Umiam lake resort is a great place to reach , be and stay if you want to enjoy the beautiful location ,view and also if you are wandering in search of tranquility. Then this is the place to be. Barapani or Umiam lake, is one of the significant location in Shillong. A major tourist attraction. Umiam lake resort is under the megalaya tourism department, and it offers the most picterquise view of the lake. Other amenities it offers are - a conference hall, spa and a swimming pool. Adventure part :There is a boat ride around the lake which costs Rs 2000/ boat (Anaconda) or Rs500 per head for small boats( rubber inflated boats) . Rooms are comfortable except for the load shedding part on the first day of our stay. The property is under state government so the service is slow and will give you the feel of regular government services every time you are expecting from a resort (like the name suggests). But the good part is - The amazing view of the lake from the room as well as the restaurant and it definitely pays up for the slow service , unfriendly staff and load shedding part of the resort . Food : breakfast is complimentary and they provide chole bhature along with sandwich, French fries, Nuggets and aloo paratha. For in room dinning they provide variety of Indian Chinese and continental cuisine. Of which I would strongly recommend chicken Masala if you are a chicken lover like me. They also boast a bar that has a huge list of cocktails, mocktails and other drinks. The room tariff is rs3500 for standard rooms. Up-to Rs8000. But I feel you are paying all your hard earned money for the view and the serenity of the location. Otherwise everything else is overpriced. Well I had a great time there and to summarize my stay it was all about the lake view, and the peace it gave me to just stay there between the woods with a lovely lake rippling gorgeously as the wind blew everytime over it. I wanted to stay here forever but sohra was calling.... And I had to go...

Apart from being a tourist attraction, it makes a perfect picnic spot for localities. The vast lake also has speed boating for visitors. Finally, after overcoming all the hustle and bustle we group of 6 friends (Samir, Diya, Shaswat, Pihu, Joy, and Piku) reached Guwahati on 16th December, we chose the time to be December because of pleasant weather as well as to enjoy the chill of North East. We kick started our much awaited and most anticipated journey on the same day, this journey holds an additional significance as it's was our first trip to North Eastern part of India. We finalized our first destination as Dawki 180 Km drive from Guwahati, which we had planned to cover by 1 PM in the noon. We did all our bookings from hiring a car to booking hotels in each location beforehand as it will reduce the expense and also reduce the hassle of same day booking. The car we booked was for the entire trip and it reduced After boarding the car at 10 AM from Guwahati our plan to reach Dawki by noon seems to had dwindled, whatever when enthusiasm is high hope stays high. Suddenly after an hour of journey, we all whooped inside the car seeing a large stretch of water body encircled with green hills Shiva (our driver) mentioned it as UMIAM LAKE/ Barapani(in local terms)the first view of our journey. Umiam Lake is a paradise for photographer and photo lovers we too didn't miss any chance to click from every angle of it until our Shiva bawled at us reminding we were getting late.
Start the journey with your arrival at the Guwahati station/airport, get greeted and straight away get transferred to Shillong. It takes around 3 hours to reach this gorgeous hill station of Shillong. On the way, drop by the Borapani Lake in the state of Meghalaya, also known as the Umiam lake, it is beautifully surrounded by Sylvan hills. On reaching Shillong, check in at the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure and later retire for the night. Attractions: Umiam Lake In the morning after the breakfast we will take a day trip of Shillong. We will be visiting the Shillong peak, located in the upper Shillong from where one can see the beauty of Shillong city under the clouds giving a perfect picturesque view of the city. After a while we head to the Elephanta falls, the water of this three steps falls comes down in flows from different levels over the fern-covered rocks and falls into the canyon down below. After that our journey comes to one of the most romantic place in Shilong, the Ward’s Lake, located in the heart of the city which was build by the British councils and is a prominent hang-out place in Meghalaya. Then we visit the Cathedral Catholic Church which attracts thousands of devotees and after that you will be transferred in the hotel. Attractions: Shillong peak, Elephanta falls, Ward’s lake, Church.
We should have planned according to early sunset... because by 6 it was all dark. We decided not to hurry to shillong and camp somewhere on the way. Yes, i carried a Tent along with me. We saw Umiam lake on the way and stopped around to check if we can halt there for the night. It was very calm and there was some construction going little away from lake. We parked beside the lake and reached out to a person cooking for the crowd. With a warm conversation we asked him if he can cook for us too. And yeah, he added more potatoes, rice and made a very delicious dinner for us. We were more than happy for it. Later we discovered it was SUNBURN that's being planned the next day. After roaming around for a while we put our tent on a plain land. We could see few people fishing at that time too. Slowly we dozed off later. It's early in the morning at 4:00 after the sunrise we realised the view from our tent. It was breath taking. The lake was huge with an island in middle. There are boats to go the island. BagWan was the happiest person. All the drowsiness faded away in a second. It was damn cold, but we were awestruck.
