About Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the union territory of India and its capital is Port Blair. Interestingly, It is 1200km far from the mainland of India but 190 km from Myanmar and 150 km north of Aceh, Indonesia, and the Andaman Sea separates it from Thailand and Myanmar. To the east of this archipelago lies the Andaman Sea and to the west the Bay of Bengal.

It is located in the Indian Ocean south of the Bay of Bengal. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are made up of about 572 small islands, And of these 37 islands are populated only, the rest are empty.

History of Andaman

The Andaman-Nicobar Islands lived in the British Raj for 200 years. During this period, the British government used to send rebels and dangerous criminals to the cellular jail here, which Indians know as 'Kalapani'.

How many tribes are there in Andaman?

The Andaman Islands are home to four 'Negrito' tribes - the Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa and Sentinelese.

The Nicobar Islands are home to two 'Mongoloid' tribes - the Shompen and Nicobarese.

The 'Negrito' tribes are believed to have arrived in the islands from Africa up to 60,000 years ago.

The tribe living on the island is considered quite dangerous. Jarawa people are usually dark black. The Jarawa tribals have no contact with the outside world. The clan also attacks those who try to reach there. People of this tribe neither keep contact with any outsider nor let anyone keep contact with themselves. More than 400 Jarawa community people live in Andaman.

Cellular Jail National Memorial

The foundation of this prison was laid in 1897, a silent witness to the atrocities committed by the British government on India's freedom fighters. There are 694 cells inside this prison. The purpose of building these cells was to stop the mutual interaction between the prisoners.

Like the octopus, there are now only three parts of this huge prison spread over seven branches. The names of the brave martyrs are written on the walls of the prison. There is also a museum where one can see the weapons from which the freedom fighters were tortured.

Veer Savarkar Park

A small beautiful park in front of the main gate of Cellular Jail. This park is dedicated to all patriots who were locked up in the Cellular Jail till the end of their life. There are many statues of freedom fighters in this park. And It is best for the waiting place before entering or after exit from cellular jail. Some historical artifacts are also painted on the wall of the park.

Radhanagar Beach

This is located on the west coast of Havelock Island, is considered to be more famous among the tourists. Radhanagar Beach is one of the best beaches in Andaman. According to the information, this beach has been considered as the best beach in India and the 7th best beach in the world by English magazine time. This is a photogenic beach where model photoshoot is also performed.

Diglipur is the largest town of North Andaman Island, in the Andaman Archipelago, India. The city is located on the southern side of Aerial Bay, at 43 meters above sea level, 298 km north of Port Blair. It is crossed by the Kalpong River, the only river of the Andaman islands.

Mount Harriet National Park

The peak named Mount Harriot is the highest peak in South Andaman and it is also a national park. Its height is 365 meters above sea level.

Chidiya Tapu
