Hikkaduwa Beach Reviews

Day 6: There are motor bike rentals available within the fort from where you can rent a bike for the day to go explore the beaches around Galle. The roads outside the city are in generally good condition but be aware of the harsh bus and truck drivers in the road especially while negotiating the curves. The most famous beaches nearby Galle are Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna which are known for their coral reefs and water sport activities. Hikkaduwa is located some 12 miles north of Galle and good for surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving. I have posted my experience of scuba diving in Hikkaduwa in the link here. Unawatuna which is just 3 miles south of Galle, is comparatively calm water beach and good for snorkeling and diving with abundant corals and fishes. Koggala beach, on the other hand is less prone to tourists and is a perfect place for a peaceful retreat. It is located further down in the south and has a sea turtle hatchery as well.
Hikkaduwa can easily be reached via a tuk tuk and you can even choose to spend the night there. We spent two nights there and visited some lovely art galleries. HOW TO REACH THERE Sri Lankan airlines are very well connected to many cities across the globe. If you’re coming from India, Jet Airways, Mihin Lanka, Air India, Spice Jet and Sri Lankan airlines flies directly into Colombo. The Turtle Hatcheryin Hikkaduwa is an amazing little place sustained by a man whose family got washed away in a tsunami. This man, who is the owner of the Turtle Hatchery continued to fulfil his father's dream and take it to great heights. This organisation runs on donations and its main purpose is to save little turtle eggs, wait till they are ready to hatch and then release the turtle babies into the sea again. There are many such turtle hatcheries in Hikkaduwa, which you can visit. The Turtle Hatchery is located on a very pretty beach, which you can explore.
On Day 2 we left for Hikkaduwabeach, which is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka and is famous for snorkeling and diving. This beach did live upto its expectations. We did snorkeling and saw various fishes and a huge turtle as well, clarity of the water wasn't at its best due to rains but i would recommend this to everyone. In fact if possible, go for diving instead of snorkeling as you get to see a whole new world when you dive deep.
Known for its nightlife, Hikkaduwa Beach is one of the most sought-after beaches in Sri Lanka. With its fantastic snorkelling and surfing activities, seafood curries, Buddhist temples and exotic massages, Hikkaduwa Beach is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka to chill or indulge in some 'me time'!
