It is the valentine week and i am going to talk about one of the most romantic places on the planet. Sometimes we focus so much on big cities like Paris and London, we overlook the beauty small towns and islands around the world that are easy to reach, full of beauty and culture and have very hospitable people. Borano is one such island. Burano is an island in the Northern Venetian Lagoon, 11 Km northeastern far from Murano and Venice. It is around 69 km by road from main Venice city but the faster way would be to go from waterways mainly through line 12 ferry.

If you are in Venice, a visit to Burano is a must. It is so colourful that it touches your senses not to mention the arts that would intrigue you. When you land in Burano, you will be intrigued by how colourful and clean the island is! Many international magazines include Burano among the top 10 most colourful cities in the world. It is also known for its amazing laces; lacemaking being one of the oldest professions in the place. In early 1800's and 1900's, lace made in Borano was exported to many parts of Europe. Now we know how those European dresses looked so killing. So let's start exploring!!

Ambience, Beauty and Colour

First of all let me tell you that Borano is a very small area, with population up-to 3000 people. But it is always swarming with tourists.

You would want to visit this pace for the ambience, peace and love. The colourful houses along the waterway cast their reflection in the water creating beautiful way ahead. BTW, for info, if you live in Burano and want to paint you house, you have to ask the local government who will tell you the colours to use so that you would not spoil the ambience.

Children and adults move freely with their bicycles- which is main transportation, balconies are filled with multicoloured flowers and fishermen move about in their traditional boats picking up fishes. Its so serene and peaceful and not to mention romantic. What is better than walk down this lane with your loved one.

Places to look around

Galuppi Square in the center of the island is a great place to visit artisans who make lace; neighbourly ladies invite the most curious visitors to come into their shops to admire the lace working. Well lace making is not the only classy stuff here, there is also the culture of glass painting, that has majorly been influenced by Morano - another island in Venetian lagoon. At the end of the square is the famous church- San Martino Bishop's Church which showcases a lot of important works of art. Sideways is located the Santa Barbara's Chapel.

Galuppi Square also has the famous lace museum - "Museo del Merletto", the Town Hall, a well made of Istria's stone and the Baldassare Galuppi's sculpture made by Remigio Barbaro, the well-known sculptor from Burano. Well history and culture together ! There are so many shops that offer souvenirs at quite a reasonable price.

Food and Desserts

If you a foodie, Borano is a paradise. It offers delicious fish dishes in local restaurants that is lip-smacking delicious. The most famous of which is the "risotto de gò": the broth in which the rice is cooked and creamed is extracted from the "gò" - a fish famously found in the Venice lagoon. Also, there are a several pizzerias where one can have delicious ice-cream in a bar or a typical Burano's cookie. Lovely desserts!!!

Burano is a one day trip and being close of Venice, it is very easy to navigate. Such a small island but it is worth a visit because of it picturesque beauty, historical places, art and lovely people. And if you love fish - its an added bonus!! Surely to be added to your must visit list.
