Kalipokhri

Kali means Dark and Pokhri means Lake in Nepali and Kalipokhri is a small Himalayan Village which was named after a lake with dark waters here. This beautiful mountain village lies inside the Sanglila National Park and is on the way from Mane Bhanjang to Sandakphu, a trekk route. The village is exactly between the Gairibas to Sandakphu and serves as a location where trekkers rest before they further trek up the Sandakphu, which is the highest peak of West Bengal.

After a 5 km long level road we reached Kalpokhri at around 4:20pm. On the way we stopped by to see a brown squirrel, some birds, thin trail of water frozen on the tracks, etc. At the village entrance, we had to pay ₹30 per person towards Sandakphu Rural Municipality, Nepal Government. We are at 3600 meters now. The village is supported by the lake on the outskirts. The village was bigger than Tonglu/Tumling as so was the lake.
Day 2 – Reaching KalipokhriThe next morning, the sight of the strikingly beautiful Kanchenjunga simply took my breath away as we set out to Kalipokhri, our next camp site, a journey of 14 km. It took us nearly 6-7 hours to get there. The highlight of the day’s trek was spotting the majestic Mount Everest. The panoramic view of four of the five highest peaks in the world, the Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu and Lhotse, was a sight to behold. We all stood there, awestruck, unable to take our eyes off the spectacular vision.Kalipokhri, a tiny little village with a lake, which we were told does not freeze even during winter, when the temperature remains at subzero level! The blackish appearance of the water gives it its name Kala Pokhri. The legendary tales that one gets to hear from the natives, literally sets your spine tingling.

We reached Kalipokhri at 4 pm approximately. We spent some time inside our trekker's hut to rest before coming out and clicking some photographs of the mesmerizing sunset. The people here and in all other places throughout the trek were extremely helpful and we were deeply moved by the warm hospitality.

Tumling - Gauribus - Kalapokhri (14 km / Six - Seven hours)From Tumling you take a diversion from the road and head to the Nepal side of the trek. The trail goes through a thick forest of Rhododendrons, the beauty of which will mesmerise you. You reach the Singalila National Park check post at Gauribus and the trail is all uphill from here to Kalapokhri.
