Tripoto

Most people just hear of Delhi University in the one month of the year, when it makes headlines for its notoriously high cut-offs. But, what follows after university life begins, is a mystery to most outsiders. If you land up in one of the colleges in North Campus, you're blessed to be in one of the most student-friendly locations in Delhi. Suddenly, cheap accommodation, food and most importantly, legendary hangout addas of North Campus are at your disposal.

While you will rarely be asked about your degree once you step out of the campus, but most people will hound you to know, "Where's the food and chill in North Campus?" Here's my list to help you out.

1. Delhi School of Economics and its popular mutton dosa

Your culinary wisdom of campus life begins from 'D school ' (the colloquial lingo for Delhi School of Economics), where the white uniform and Gandhi topi-clad bhaiya ji will come and help you choose some favourites from the long menu of the D School canteen. Obviously, you cannot go back without trying the very-popular mutton dosa.

2. The new IRCTC canteen, and its delicious thali

Newbies know the Arts Faculty's Spic Macay Canteen as the IRCTC canteen now. For years, this historical canteen has been serving freshly-cooked food to weary students taking occasional breaks from the Arts Faculty library. If you find yourself lost in their elaborate menu, opt for the delicious thali, which will make your day.

3. Bamboos, its aloo bonda and cosy chatter

I'd like to pitch the small restaurant between the Law Faculty and the Arts Faculty as a great spot to meet friends and chat in a cosy corner over a cup of tea. And yes, its famous aloo bondas are available throughout university working hours.

4. Kamala Nehru Ridge, for a great cycling session

Go to Kamala Nehru Ridge and relax. Take your eyes off the professors and students going overboard with their exercising routines, and focus on the neatly-trimmed gardens and the bougainvillea instead. The Kamala Nehru Ridge has a great cycling and running track. If you don't have one of your own, get cycles on rent from the Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station, located close by.

5. The VC Office Garden, to just laze around

The Vice Chancellor's garden is open for students at all hours. Away from the administrative block, the pathways through the garden are a great place to spend the evenings. The banta wala who sits close to the gate of the VC lawns is in high demand during the evenings.

6. Vintage, for and its legendary coffee

The legendary cold coffee that was once served out of a small coffee shop in Bungalow Road, Kamla Nagar, has now shifted to Hudson Lane. The cold coffee is still the best in North Campus, and now comes along with a fantastic upgraded menu.

7. Sudama's outside Hansraj College, for delicious elaichi tea

Across the road, outside Hansraj College gate, Sudama serves the best elaichi tea till late in the night. Everyone, from Hansraj and neighbouring colleges can be seen flocking to Bungalow Road, and chilling at the tea shop with a styrofoam cup in hand.

8. Science Faculty, for the occasional nature walks

Right at the centre of North Campus is the Science Faculty, aka the best location to go for occasional evening and morning walks. Considering the plight of the rest of Delhi, the area is relatively greener and cleaner. The chai tapri inside the faculty is where you find the best minds of the country enjoying the evening over a cup of tea.

9. Majnu Ka Tilla, for the best of cheap food and fashion

The Tibetan refugee colony near Gurdwara Majnu ka Tilla Sahib is the best place to find good Tibetan and Nepali food. Koko's and Ama Restaurant are food joints I can vouch for. Besides the food, Majnu ka Tilla is a shopping hub that dictates the style secret of the students of North Campus.

10. Tom Uncle's Maggi, for an experience like none other

Just near the turn of the road near Ramjas College, Tom Uncle's Maggi Point has been serving lip-smacking maggi for years now. There are more than 20 kinds of maggie served with banta or tea. If nothing else, the dollops of butter and cheese on your plate will make you come back to this spot.

11. Woodbox, for continental food

You do not have to leave the campus far behind to reach Hudson Lane. The quirky cafe right at the beginning of the lane has a great rooftop space decorated with recycled artefacts. This relatively new hangout adda is best known for the continental food it serves.

12. PG Men's Hostel, for its Saturday special chicken fried rice

Every Saturday, the South Indian Canteen at the PG Men's Hostel serves the best chicken biriyani in the campus. Shetty Anna who runs the canteen also serves mouth-watering South Indian food and filter coffee throughout the week. All students of North Campus are allowed in the canteen and it becomes a great hangout adda before 8pm.

13. Hudson Lane, for endless opportunities

A few years back some of the most legendary restaurants on Bungalow Road had shut down, including QDs, which is famous for its tandoori momos. QDs and many other 'K Nags Fame' restaurants are now open on Hudson Lane. Some new cafes that are completely unmissable, include The Hudson Cafe and The Big Yellow Door.
