Dehradun Sight Seeing and Travel guide | Top 5 Places to visit in Dehradun

Tripoto

Dehradun is the capital of North Indian state Uttarakhand formerly known as Uttaranchal. Dehradun is derived from two words dera’ meaning home and ‘doon’ meaning valley which lies on the Shivalik region of the mighty Himalayas. Two sacred Indian rivers, Ganga on the east and Yamuna flows by West of this city. This city is rises at a height of 1480ft above sea level. It has so much to offer to adventure freaks as well as peace loving couples. I would say it’s a beautiful escape for travelers as weekend gateway. Let’s have a quick idea to make trip plan.

Best time to visit

The climate is pleasant all year around, however the best time to visit is from April – June as the temperature is neither too hot nor cold. This weather is considered as favourable to tourists because there are some tourist places in water streams which can’t be explored during winter due to the freezing temperatures. I visited those places during December 2020 that’s why could not go into waterbodies.

How to reach

The nearest airport to Dehradun is the Jolly grant airport which is around 30-35kms from the city. It takes 40 minutes by cab to reach there.

By train

Dehradun is well connected by rail route with all across the country.

By Bus

Dehradun is at a distance of 235 kms from nation Capital Delhi which has running buses between these two cities and takes 5-6 hours one side. Apart from public transport hiring taxis are also available.

Must visit places

Sahastradhara

The literal meaning of the word Sahastradhara is thousand-fold spring. This was the first place I visited during Dehradun trip. It is one of the most famous places located at 11 kms from the city. This scenic waterfall is known for its medicinal properties which cures the long-term skin issues. The presence of sulphur spring in the water is the medicine. You can see boards with mention of Gandhak mishrit taalaab in the entrance. There is a ropeway near which takes you to the hilltop.

Robber’s cave

Got scared by the name??Don’t be as there are no real Robbers inside the cave apart from the natural beauty which can steal your heart. Locally known as Guchhupani. The name Robber’s cave was given by the britishers after they came to know that the robbers used to hide in the cave after looting. This place is perfect combo for the adventure bugs and those who want to beat the heat. This cave has a flowing river filled with cold water and trek leads to a waterfall. Barefoot walk inside the dark cave with streams appearing and disappearing is a unique experience. This place is my favourite of all in Dehradun. Although it was freezing cold, I could not stop myself from enjoying through the gushing water. You can have some lips smaking Maggie at water Maggie point in between the streams.

Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple

Dehradun is not only a tourist place but also has religious importance. According to Hindu scriptures of Ramayana & Mahabharata, Dehradun is the birthplace of Dronacharya who is believed to be alive even today. Pandavas had an influence on the city when they were ruling Hastinapur. The temple is named so because water continuously drips from the cave celling above the Shivalinga. I felt a sensation of peace and calmness when visited the temple. I am sure it happens with all the devotees.
