Mashobra is known for its misty mountains, trees of pine, oak, cedar and deodar creating a mesmerising atmosphere perfect for a weekend getaway. Take a break in the 'Quieter Shimla' as you sit by a picturesque stream gushing through the valley. And this gorgeous destination has a Presidential retreat which wasn't open to public before. However, in order for people to learn the heritage of the place, the 'Rashtrapati Niwas' a 173-year-old heritage building located in the picturesque surroundings of Mashobra, Himachal Pradesh will be open to the public very soon to visit.

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday dedicated the 'Rashtrapati Niwas', also known as ‘Presidential Retreat’ located in Mashobra to general public. It will open its gates to visitors from the 23rd of May.

The Retreat was earlier on a permanent lease from the Raja of Koti in 1895. While Earl of Elgin was the first Viceroy of India who used to this Retreat as the viceregal residence. Since then this retreat was used by all viceroys to spend weekends here. The Viceregal lodge or retreat has witnessed several pre and post independence events.

The President of India only has two residences outside Delhi, the Retreat at Mashobra and Rashtrapati Nilayam in Hyderabad. Whilst all Presidents have visited the Rashtrapati Niwas at Mashobra during summers.

Rashtrapati Niwas is adorned with expansive lawns and a tulip garden, spread over 10,628 sq feet. There is a wooden building as well built by then medical superintendent of Shimla with ‘dhajji’ walls in 1850.

President Droupadi Murmu’s was made in order for people to learn the heritage.

In order to visit the retreat there is a fee of Rs. 50 per person for Indian Nationals and Rs. 250 for foreign nationals throughout the year except on Mondays and other government holidays. During the President’s stay, the retreat will be unavailable for entry. From 23 May until 30 June, 2023 entry for school children will be free.

By Road: The Rashtrapati Niwas, Mashobra is 12 km from Shimla (via Dhalli Bypass and NH 5) and 5 km from Kufri (via NH 5).

By Train: Shimla railway station is approximately 13 km from Mashobra.
