Growing up, I used to have this vague fascination for traveling in trains and listening to “Yeh Jo des hai mera” while peeking out of the window seat, which of course I would always manage to get somehow.

It's been years now, while the only change has been in the playlist, I still can’t get over my love for trains and window seats.

Talking about playlists, music is something which always accompanies me to all my travel plans be it a solo-introspective trip, or group-of-friends-travelling-just-for-the-sake-of-drinking-beer trip, or aaj-kuch-toofani-karte hai trip. While all of these have different auras and moods set for the playlist, mine have particularly found a commonality in all my selections lately.

Be it Kailash Kher’s 'Bismillah', or 'Afreen' by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Coke Studio has been the blessing for all the old-school-MTV-generation who have been on the quest of wanting to recreate their Window-Seat visuals. They are melodic, serene, and directly embraces the soul.

Here’s a humble attempt of compiling some of the favorites from my 'Window Seat' collection.

1: Dekh Tera Kya/Latthay Di Chaadar by Quratulain Balouch & Farhan Saeed

Farhan Saeed’s warm, tuneful take on ‘Dekh Tera’ paired with Quratulain Balouch’s textured, radiant voice in Latthay Di Chaadar makes for the perfect mixture for a musical spectrum.

“Ye jhonka tere ghar ka rasta banega
Ye jhonka tere ghar ka rasta banega
Akele mein tujhse mila toh kahega
Akele mein tujhse mila toh kahega
Mila toh kahega…
O…
Dekh tera kya
Rang kar diya hai
Khushboo ka jhonka tere
Sang kar diya hai (x2)”

2: Aaj Jane Ki Zid Na Karo by Farida Khanum

Sung by the legendary Farida Khanum, this song is an absolute melody requesting your better-half to "not leave and experience the tale of love for the moment."

“Aaj jaane kee jid naa karo - (x3)
Yu hee pehlu me baithe raho - (x2)
Aaj jaane kee jid naa karo
Hay mar jaayenge, ham toh lut jaayenge
Aisee baate kiya naa karo
Aaj jaane kee jid naa karo - (x2)
Hay mar jaayenge, ham toh lut jaayenge
Aisee baate kiya naa karo, aaj jaane kee jid naa karo”

3: Julie by Ali Zafar feat. Danyal Zafar

A playful, modern tune, Julie is a bright take on heartbreak. Written, composed by Ali Zafar, featuring Danyal Zafar’s guitar solo, the song just can’t help but push the envelope for the listeners.

“...hey Julie main tumse pyar karta tha
Tera aitbar karta tha
Haan tujhpe dil se marta tha
Tu meri raat ki shehzadiyon si
Apsara thi, dil nasheen thi
Jaane kyun mere dil ko toone yun toda
Ho Julie lagti mujhko tu bhole si
Haan mujhse tu yeh boli thi
Kisi ki aur na hogi
Tu mujhko thaam kar mera sath degi
Gir gaya to hath degi
Oh farebi yeh jhooth toone kyun bola…”

4: Bismillah by Salim - Sulaiman, Kailash Kher, Munawar Masoom

Sufi, soulful and serene, this one is surely apt for moments when all you want is to close your eyes and let yourself dwell within.

“Barqaton ka peghaam mile
Kehne se la illah illalah
Rehmaton ka salaam mile
Bas kehne se Bismillah…
Bismillah Bismillah Bismillah ……
Bismillah…
Tere naam se shuru hua
Tere naam pe khatam lillah
Bismillah Bismillah Bismillah …….
Bismillah…”

5: Ranjish Hi Sahi by Ali Sethi

This evergreen classic, originally composed by Nisar Bazmi, and now sung by the amazing and magical Ali Sethi will definitely take you onto some another world.

“Kis kis ko bataaenge
Judaayi ka sabab hum
Kis kis ko bataaenge
Judaayi ka sabab hum
Tu mujh se khafa hai to zamaane ke liye aa
Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa
Ranjish hi sahi
Aa phir se mujhe chhod ke jaane ke liye aa
Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa
Ranjish hi sahi
Aa phir se mujhe chhod ke jaane ke liye aa
Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa
Ranjish hi sahi..”

6: Nindiya Re by Kaavish

Song made of (and for) dreams by dreamers, this one would sure make up for the most soothing lullaby of our time. Plug in your earphones while sleeping under the stars, and you will immediately fall in love with this one.

“Haule haule raaton ko
chupke se aaja re
nindiya re nindiya re
akhiyon men samaaja re
nindiya re
Kaheen door sitaaron pih
chanda ke ishaaron pih
palne ko tere jo
pariyon ne jhulaaya re
nindiya re
Jugnu panchhi pyaare pyaare
tere sapne bunen
neend bhari in aankhon se teri
chupke se kahte rahen
Soja re soja re
sapnon men khoja re
soja re soja re
sapnon men khoja re
nindiya re”

7: Afreen Afreen, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan & Momina Mustehsan

Talking about Coke Studio, and not mentioning ‘Afreen Afreen’ won’t be fair, right? Crafted by the legendary, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan over two decades ago, the song still holds the strength to serenade the audience in this recreated version.

“Aisa dekha nahi khoobsurat koi
Jism jaise Ajanta ki murat koi
Jism jaise nigahon pe jadoo koi
Jism nagma koi jism khushboo koi
Jism jaise mehakti hui chandni
Jism jaise machalti hui ragini
Jism jaise ke khilta hua ik chaman
Jism jaise ke suraj ki pehli kiran
Jism tarsha hua dilkasho dilnashin
Sandli sandli marmari marmari
Husan-e-jaana ki tareef mumkin nahi(x2)
Afreen afreen afreen afreen
Jane kaisi bandhi tune akhiyon ke dor
Mann mera khicha chala aaya teri aor
Mere chehre ki subah zulfon ki shaam
Mera sab kuch hai piya ab se tere naam
Nazron ne teri chhua toh hai ye jadoo hua
Hone lagi hoon main haseen
Afreen afreen afreen... (x4)”

8: Laadki by Sachin-Jigar, Taniskha S, Kirtidan G, Rekha B

Composed by Sachin Jigar, 'Laadki' captures the beautiful conversation between a Father and his daughter, the celebration of their unique bond, and the journey of a girl growing up to be a woman.

“Dori yeh khinchi dori, Palne ki tune mori
Mere sapno ko jhulaya sari raat
Bhale bagiya teri chhodi, Bhale nindiyan teri chori
Bass itti si yaad tu rakhiyo meri baat
Teri laadki main (2x)
Teri laadki main chhodungi na tera haath..(2x)
(Kirtidan Gadhvi)
Ho..Ho.. Mari laadki..

Mari ladkhi re..
E meethudi ame joshu tari vaat...”

9: Kattey by Ram Sampath, Bhanvari Devi, Hard Kaur

One of the most interesting collaborations to ever come up on Coke Studio, Kattey is a blend of rebellion and freedom. Bhanvari Devi's traditional Rajasthani vocals fused with Hard Kaur's scorching rap on her personal life, this one's sure giving you chills, for real.

“Sanwariyo ghat mai re, Ramaiyo ghat mai
Sanwariyo ghat mai re, Ramaiyo ghat mai
Thaane kathe, thaane kathe (x2)
Thaane kathe dhoondba jaaun re
Sanwariyo ghat maay, ho o o jiyo...
(Hard Kaur)
….Hard Kaur and I always did it my way,
Don't like what I say you need to hit the highway,
Give it to you straight boy no sideways,
This is my world all ya punks need to migrate
Yeah cuz I'm certified fresh,
Kill it in a man's world... better then the rest.
Determined in my mind so I know what my future is,
Top of the world I rock all metropolis
I rock the people them, time and time again,
Many many men, with my paper pen, time time again
Do what I do to the death till you reach the top
Don't won't can't shoulda could never ever stop…”

10: Dost by Abida Parveen

This one brings forth the magical voice of Abida Parveen making us remember the value of the beautiful bond called Friendship. Plug in and reminisce about all your memories of love, laughter and life with your close ones’.

“Kahoon dost se, Dost ki baat kya kya
Kahoon kahoon (x2)
Kahoon dost se, Dost ki baat kya kya (x2)
Rahi dushmanon se, Mulaaqaat kya kya
