While the city is famous for their indoor splendors such as museums and galleries, Washington D.C. has plenty of activities to participate in outside. Being close to the Potomac River, and with plenty of walking and biking, D.C. has a magnificent array of things to do outside for everyone
The capital's national mall is perfect for walking. The wide paths, surrounding scenery of beautiful monuments, and plenty of food trucks make the National Mall a destination in itself. Walk by the reflection pool in front of the Lincoln to enjoy ducks and stunning views of the city, or walk towards the capitol building to pass by memorials and groves of trees.

This seasonal activity offers a different perspective of Washington D.C. and its skyline. Those kayaking can enjoy refreshing breezes off the Potomac River, good exercise, and views of the monuments from the water. Paddle boarding and and paddle boats are also available throughout the basin and shoreline.

Part of the National Gallery of Art, the Sculpture Garden is a refreshing way to enjoy art outside. Filled with plants as well as statues and even an ice rink, the museum makes it easy for those who prefer to be outside to also get their fill of culture for the day.

This outdoor garden is a living and breathing museum. Educating the public about the environment, the National Arboretum is as beautiful as it is edifying. Admission is free, pets are allowed, and the gift shop offers snacks to hungry guests. This site is impressive as well as accessible.

Biking in the City
Rental bikes are available throughout D.C., and offer a new perspective on the city. With plenty of trails to ride through in places like Lafayette Square and along the tidal basin, Washington D.C. also has very biking friendly roads even along the hectic national mall. Guests who stay at The Hay-Adams not only are right in the thick of all the best biking spots, but are able to attain bicycles free of charge through the hotel (on a first come first serve basis).

Wandering Through the Neighborhoods
Washington D.C. is hopping with hip neighborhoods offering boutique shopping as well as eateries, but the older neighborhoods offer a charm best experienced on their streets outside. From 5Georgetown to the Wharf, these houses range from colorful town homes to vintage brick mansions. With old trees, cobblestone streets, and vine encrusted murals, exploring the neighborhoods for their outdoor allure is very popular.

The neighborhoods in Capitol Hill offer stellar views of the Capitol Building as well as a lovely farmers market. The brick homes and narrow streets make it walking friendly. Enjoy street musicians, floral vendors, and outdoor markets as you wander through these picture perfect roads.
