The central core of the building is open with no glass, this building is inspired and designed after objects the Cantonese traditionally associate with luck and good fortune. This is why the building is associated with good luck.

The distinctive feature of the building is that it is shaped like a waterwheel or a Chinese Jade. In Chinese mythology, a waterwheel by the river brings money. The building stands at the banks of Pearl river. The initial response to the building up-and-running was not welcomed with open arms by the locals, as they saw a life-sized donut standing on the streets. But just like many other iconic constructions across the world, like the London eye, or the Eiffel tower in Paris, or the pyramid building in San Francisco, the Gold-coin building is finally receiving appreciation.
