When we started planning our trip to Europe, we knew we had to add this place to our list of day trips from Paris. We saw it on a video by Ryan Shirley on Youtube and in an instant, this place had to go our bucket list. We kept an entire day for Mont Saint Michel. It is one of the most beautiful spots to explore on the coast of Normandy.

Here is how we spent the day in this Disney-like location.

The Mythical Island that Defies Tides

Low tides

Mont Saint Michel, an awe-inspiring rocky tidal island, reveals its true identity during high tide. Connected to the mainland by a natural causeway at low tide, this mystical realm becomes a secluded island as the waters rise. The island's allure has been a source of wonder since ancient times, leading it to become not only a spiritual sanctuary but also an impenetrable fortress. (Did you know? Mont Saint Michel's tidal events are a spectacle in their own right. The village turns into an island during high tides.)

A Glimpse into History

Venture back in time to witness Mont Saint Michel's captivating history, a tapestry of devotion, legends, and resilience. From its early days as Mont Tombe, home to devoted hermits and monks, to its transformation into Mont Saint Michel at the peril of the sea, the island's story weaves a fascinating narrative.

Building a Dream

In 708 AD, Saint Aubert received divine guidance to build a church atop Mont Tombe. Legend has it that the Archangel Michael himself compelled Aubert to fulfill this mission. The subsequent church, dedicated to Saint Michael, marked the beginning of Mont Saint Michel's religious significance.

Throughout the centuries, Mont Saint Michel endured trials and triumphs. It weathered Viking invasions, witnessed the resurgence of monastic life under the Benedictine monks, and stood defiant during the Hundred Years' War. The fortified abbey's remarkable survival against all odds showcases the island's indomitable spirit.

Today, Mont Saint Michel welcomes travelers with open arms, inviting them to wander its charming streets and explore its historic treasures. Begin your journey at the Burgher's Guardroom, now the Tourist's Office, and pass through the King's Gate, a fortified entrance that sets the stage for the medieval marvels that await.

Indulge your curiosity at Mont Saint Michel's diverse museums. Discover the island's history and construction at the Archeoscope, delve into its maritime character at the Maritime and Ecology Museum, and step into the medieval era at the Museum of History. Tiphaine's House, the residence of a legendary knight, offers a glimpse into the past.

While we missed this activity as we were more inclined towards exploring the narrow streets and enjoying the food, this is a good way to learn about the rich and fascinating history of this gorgeous town.

No journey is complete without savoring the local flavors. Try the renowned giant soufflé omelets at La Mère Poulard, a restaurant with a history dating back to 1879. Let the aroma and taste transport you to a time when simplicity and authenticity reigned supreme. Also try the delicious ice-cream options during your long and steep walk upwards.

We took a Flixbus round trip from Central Paris. The journey took about 4 hours with a 20 minute refreshment stop in between. As we left the city life of Paris, and hit the endless roads of Normandy, we knew the journey was worth the time. The bus stopped at the tram terminal which takes 10 minutes to reach right outside Mont Saint Michel. However, you can also walk from the tram terminal up to the gates of the village. The walk take about 30 minutes, but is worth every bit and the views are breathtaking.

By Car

This is the cheapest and easiest way, but the ‘con‘ side of it is that there can be a queue to the car park. To get here from Paris, it will take about 4 hours. Just follow the road signs to Normandy, and once within the region, take the A84 from Caen that heads southwest until you reach Avranches. From there, merge into D43 and follow the road signs that lead to Mont St. Michel.

By Train & Bus

From Paris, you have two options with the TGV or Train à Grande Vitesse.

Paris to Rennes which is 55km south of Mont St. Michel for $70 or €56 (takes 2 hours). Upon arrival, there are buses (Keolis Emeraude) that depart four times daily (timed with the arrival of the train).

Paris to Pontorson which is 9km away from the island. From there you can take bus #15 to Saint Michel from the station.

Where to Stay

I personally recommend you stay in Paris and take just a day-trip to Mont Saint Michel. However, if you want to experience the village life and are not time-bound, then there are a few hotels in Mont Saint Michel. However, it's best to know that this little village is a highly isolated tourist spot and can get extremely lonely after sun down. Therefore, it's best to book a hotel or an Airbnb outside the area.

As the sun sets over Mont Saint Michel, revealing its ethereal glow against the night sky, one truth remains evident: this tidal island is a realm of wonder, history, and unending fascination. Explore its streets, climb its steps, and immerse yourself in its story — a travel experience like no other.
