In the early 18th century, Elector Augustus the Strong sought to establish Dresden as a major center for arts and culture, inviting talented sculptors and goldsmiths to his residence and commissioning a series of magnificent rooms to display his precious treasures. One such room, the Green Vault Treasury, or Grunes Gewolbe, features an extraordinary collection of historical jewelry.

Guests have reported that their visit to the castle was enjoyable and that the gardens were breathtaking. However, there are some who felt that their visit was a waste of time and money as they had to wait for a long period of time before being allowed inside the palace.

Panometer Dresden

Located in a former gasometer, the Panometer Dresden houses one of two panoramic paintings by Austrian-born artist Yadegar Asisi. The 27-meter-high smouldering cityscape of Baroque Dresden in 1945 and its reconstructed form since the wartime bombings are displayed in this unique venue that was converted into a panorama exhibition in 2006.

The exhibition also features scenes of daily life from Baroque times, with historic residents such as Tsar Peter I or strongman Johann Karl von Eckenberg as well as market women and everyday citizens dotted about the scene. The detail of the images is so amazing that it’s worth bringing your binoculars to spot the many little details, from house fires and funerals to a cat on top of a church roof.
