The Shirakawa-go is one of the popular travel destinations in Japan especially for international tourists.

It is a remote village located in Gifu Prefecture. What is it famous for? Shirakawa-go is one of the UNESCO world heritages in Japan.

It was declared as a world heritage in 1995. It is famous for the traditional gassho-zukuri farm houses in the village. Many of them are over 200 years old! The name gasso-zukuri comes from their shapes i.e. they were constructed looking as if they were hands in prayer. The shape of the houses are designed to hold the heavy snow on the roof.You can make a day trip from a city of Takayama or Kanazawa.
