Before We Trek: Unveiling the Essence of Nathdwara

Nathdwara, nestled amidst the picturesque Aravalli Hills, is a tranquil haven in the royal state of Rajasthan, India. Located approximately 50 kilometers north of Udaipur, this quaint town boasts a unique blend of spiritual charm and artistic heritage.

The Maharana Pratap Airport in Udaipur, approximately 60 kilometers away, serves as the closest air gateway. The city of Udaipur also houses an important City railway station, connecting Nathdwara to various parts of India through a well-established rail network.

Location : Shree Hanuman Ji Mandir

Ultimate summit point : More on that and trek later in the report

The Spiritual Oasis: At the heart of Nathdwara lies the revered Shrinathji Temple, a sanctum that holds immense significance for followers of the Pushti Marg sect of Vaishnavism. This 17th-century temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna in his child form, Shrinathji, and is a site of devout worship. The idol of Shrinathji, believed to be self-manifested, is adorned with intricate jewelry and garments, captivating the devotees with its divine aura. The temple is not just a religious site but also an architectural marvel, with its intricate carvings and majestic spires.

Devotees flock to Nathdwara throughout the year, but the town truly comes alive during festivals like Janmashtami and Holi, when the air is filled with the melodies of bhajans and the vibrant colors of celebration.

Artistry in Motion: Nathdwara is not only a spiritual haven but also a cradle of artistic traditions. The town is renowned for its Pichwai paintings, a form of traditional Rajasthani art that depicts various scenes from Lord Krishna's life. Wander through the narrow lanes, and you'll find local artisans engrossed in creating these exquisite masterpieces, each telling a unique story with its vivid colors and intricate detailing.

The Craftsmanship of Nathdwara extends beyond paintings; the town is also known for its traditional terracotta work, ivory articles, and the famous Nathdwara-style paintings on cloth. Visitors have the opportunity to witness these skilled artisans at work and even acquire these beautiful creations as souvenirs.

Modern Times attractions: Nathdwara, with its already well-established values from centuries past, now boasts even more attractions, the most prominent being the "Statue of Belief" or "Vishwas Swaroopam." This awe-inspiring Lord Shiva art stands tall at an impressive 369 feet, making it one of the largest Shiva statues globally and visible from up to 20 kilometers away! This gives pilgrims yet another compelling reason to visit.

But Nathdwara doesn't stop there in its quest to offer an unforgettable experience. At the time of writing this blog (23-11-2023), the town has embraced a flurry of modern attractions, transforming its landscape into a hub of excitement. Imagine a snow park, likely the only one in the state of Rajasthan! Nathdwara's own snow park adds a touch of winter wonder to this spiritual haven, inviting visitors to revel in the joy of snow amidst otherwise arid expanse of Rajasthan.

And for the thrill-seekers, Nathdwara unveils a host of adventure offerings that might surprise you in this small town setting. From karting to bungee jumping, zip-lining, and even a rocket ejector, Nathdwara has become a playground for those seeking an adrenaline rush against the backdrop of cultural richness.

Now back to the Trek: On February 19th, 2021, relying on my directional sense and local instincts, I set out to explore a hillock with a Lord Hanuman temple on the outskirts of Nathdwara. Given the small size of Nathdwara, one could argue that the entire town is within walking distance, but to emphasize the relative distance, the temple was about 1.5 kilometers away from my home. Equipped with a water bottle and some snacks, I embarked on this trek, though not particularly challenging, I'd recommend carrying water.

The temple, known as Shree Hanuman Ji Temple on Google Maps, offers panoramic views, and to assist fellow trekkers, I've embedded the coordinates link in the text. The trek was straightforward, aided by navigation, and the best part—it didn't cost a penny, as should be the case with any locals exploring on foot.

For those preferring a quicker journey, an auto-rickshaw might be a convenient option. While I can only guess, a round trip fare from wherever one might be staying in Nathdwara could be around 250-350 rupees (Explains the Trip Cost section added in the Trip Details). To capture close-up views, as demonstrated in this trip report, a mobile with high optical zoom or a camera with similar capabilities would be beneficial.

Timing is key for the optimal experience, and I recommend visiting either early in the morning or during sunset. These moments enhances the scenic beauty with preferable lighting conditions, soothing Hue and temperature also stays bearable.
